Washington, DC - American University scored two goals in the final 11:35 of the game to break a 5-5 tie and the Eagles hung on for a 7-5 victory over Wagner College in a defensive-minded affair in our nation's capital today.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-3 on the young season while American, who competes in the Patriot League, improves to 2-3.
Senior midfielder
Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan) paced the Seahawks with two goals. Scoring one goal apiece for the Green & White were senior middie
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) and senior attackers
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) and
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY / C.W. Baker).
Sophomore midfielder
Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ/Verona) and sophomore attack
Heidi Colford led Wagner in draw controls with two apiece. In goal, senior
Katie Ferraro (Ownings Mill, MD/McDonogh) recorded eight saves while going the distance between the pipes.
Jessica Wojciechowski , Jennifer DeSimone and Shauna Norris scored two goals apiece to lead American offensively. Fiona Geier was credited with six saves for American.
The Eagles outshot Wagner 22-11 and led in ground balls, 11-10, while the Seahawks held a 7-6 edge in draw controls.After falling behind 1-0, the Seahawks tallied unanswered goals from Tumolo and Fay in taking their lone lead of the game at 2-1. The Eagles then went on a 3-0 run, with two of those scored coming from Norris, in taking a 4-2 lead. Gegan got one back with a goal at the 1:45 mark of the first half to make it a 4-3 game. With one second ;left in the half, Wagner was whistled for a penalty which Wojciechowski converted in giving the Eagles a 5-3 lead at halftime.
That's the way the score remained until the 18:38 mark of the second half when Pastore notched a goal on a free position shot to again make it in a one-goal game at 5-4. Less than three minutes later, Gegan knocked home her second goal of the game to knot the score at 5-5.
DeSimone gave American the lead with 11:35 left to play on a free position and DeSimone added another with 9:38 left. Neither team could find the range offensively the rest of the way as the Eagles held on for the 7-5 win.
Wagner is next in action on Tuesday, March 1 when the Seahawks travel to Philadelphia to meet the Temple University Owls of the Atlantic 10 Conference. SCORING SUMMARY -- 1st -- | Wagner | American |
