Staten Island, NY – Wagner junior guard
Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ / Vineland) scored 16 points and freshman guard
Corinn Baggs (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy) pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds but it was not enough to offset a 27-point, 13-rebound effort by Delaware State's NaJai Pollard as the Hornets earned a 61-49 decision this afternoon.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-3 on the season while Delaware State, of the MEAC, improved to 1-3.
The Green & White were on top 22-17 following a Russell jumper before the Hornets closed the first half on a 12-3 run in taking a 29-25 at the intermission.
Delaware State then opened the second half on an 8-0 run in building a 12-point lead at 37-25. Wagner responded with a 9-2 burst, closing to within five at 44-39, but the Hornets answered with a quarter-closing 7-2 spurt to take a 51-41 lead into the final stanza. The closest the Seahawks would get the rest of the was eight, at 51-43, on a Baggs layup with 9:43 left.
Sophomore guard
Julia McClure (Secaucus, NJ / Secaucus) joined Russell in double figures with 10 points while freshman guard
Kellie Crouch (North Brunswick, NJ / St. John Vianney) and freshman forward
Kerstie Phills (Charlotte, NC / Charlotte Christian), who was saddled with foul trouble throughout before eventually fouling out, chipped in with six points apiece.
Pollard was the lone DSU player in double figures as Ivana Negron and Aaliyah Davis added eight points each.
Delaware State outshot the short-handed Seahawks, who dressed just seven players, 42%-26%, while holding a 51-38 edge in the rebounding department.
The Seahawks are next in action on Saturday, November 26 when they make the long trek to the University of New Hampshire for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off vs. the Wildcats.
