Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's basketball team dropped a 69-40 decision to the Towson University Tigers, 69-40, on Thursday evening at the Spiro Sports Center.
The Seahawks fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Tigers, who hail from the competitive Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) improve to 2-0.
The Green & White had two players in double figures, led by junior guardÂ
Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), who poured in a game-high 16 points, seven of which came in the first half. Â Russell matched her career-high with seven made field goals, recording the feat on two occasions, the most coming at Central Connecticut (2/20/16).Â
Freshman forward
Kerstie Phills (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Christian) recorded her first career double-double as the neophyte finished the game with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Fellow freshman, guardÂ
Kellie Crouch (North Brunswick, NJ/Saint John Vianney), chipped in with nine points off the bench while going a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range.Â
Towson also place a pair of players in double figures, led by Raven Bankston's team-leading 16 points, which came on 7-of-10 shooting, in addition to pulling down a team-high six rebounds. Sianni Martin added 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Â
The teams traded buckets early in the contest before the Seahawks took their largest lead of the night, thanks to a three-pointer from Russell, which gave the Green & White a 9-4 advantage.
Towson answered with a 17-0 run that spanned six minutes, in building a 21-9 lead two minutes into the second quarter. Â Â
Wagner trimmed the lead back to 11 at the 4:03 mark of the second quarter, as Phills was able to muscle in a layup off the a feed from junior guardÂ
Africa Williams (Brooklyn, NY/Banneker [Mohawk Valley CC]), who finished with three points, three assists, and three rebounds. The visitors out the scored 37 of the contest's final 61 points in earning the double-digit win.Â
Wagner will close out its three-game homestand on Sunday, November 20 when the Seahawks host the Delaware State University Lady Hornets. Tipoff from the Spiro Sports Center is slated for 1:00 pm and the game will be streamed live on NEC Front Row (www.necfrontrow.com)Â
