Lowell, MA – Despite placing four players in double figures, the Wagner men's basketball team dropped an 87-76 decision at UMass Lowell tonight at the Costello Center.
The loss, which comes three days after the Seahawks registered a momentous 67-58 victory at No. 18/16 UConn, gives Wagner a 1-1 record on the young season while the River Hawks, who were beaten by a count of 90-76 at UMass in their opener, are also 1-1.
The Green & White are next in action on Saturday, November 19 at 4:00 p.m. when the Seahawks host Fairfield University of the MAAC in their home opener at the Spiro Sports Center.
Junior guard
Corey Henson (Upper Marlboro, MD / DeMatha Catholic) led Wagner tonight with 19 points, junior guard
JoJo Cooper (Wilmington, DE / Concord) tallied 13. A major bright spot for Wagner was the play of freshman guard
Blake Francis (Herndon, VA / Westfield), who tossed in 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting in the first collegiate game of his career, while senior guard
Michael Carey (Nassau, Bahamas / Lamar Consolidated / San Jacinto) added 11.
Redshirt senior forward
Mike Aaman (Hazlet, NJ / Raritan / [Rhode Island]), who was named both the Lou Henson National Mid-Major Player of the Week and Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week earlier in the day off his 15-point, nine-rebound affair at UConn, finished with nine points and five rebounds tonight.
For the River Hawks, sophomore guard Isaac White led all scorers with 20 points, while junior guard Matt Harris and redshirt junior guard Jahad Thomas finished with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Wagner took its largest lead of the game at 7-4 after Carey drained a three-pointer off the feed from Henson. UML answered with a 9-0 run, however, over a five-minute stretch to take a 13-7 lead. A 16-5 UML run later in the half escalated the lead to 34-20 with 2:30 remaining before halftime and the River Hawks took a 37-26 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The closest that the Seahawks would get in the second half was five, following a pair of free throws by
AJ Sumbry (East Windsor, NJ / St. Benedict's Prep / Quinnipiac University) with 11:32 left that made it a 51-46 game. But Tyler Livingston countered with a three-point bucket at the 10:27 mark to extend the lead to eight, at 54-46, and Wagner was unable to draw closer than six points the rest of the way.
The Seahawks had a tough night on the offensive end, shooting 36.1 % (22-of-61), which included a 7-of-26 (26.9%) effort from three-point range. Conversely, the River Hawk shot a healthy 51.1% (23-of-45) from the floor, including 50% accuracy (9-of-18) from beyond the arc.
The Green & White held a sizeable 45-27 advantage on the boards but, in the end, were undone by their cold shooting and inability to make defensive stops.
