Lawrenceville, NJ - The Wagner women's tennis team defeated the Rider University Broncs, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 3-1 on the season while Rider falls to 2-2.Â
"I am very proud of the way the girls responded all afternoon," commented head coach Aida Castany. "We faced a bit of a climb after doubles play, but, were able to refocus, which led us to this hard-fought victory."
Rider took an early 1-0 lead in the match after taking two of three in doubles. Junior
Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) and junior
Carolyn Gibson (San Marcos, CA/IMG Academy [FL]) earned a 6-1 victory in No. 3 doubles over Danielle Scrudato/Olivia Banks.
In singles play, senior
Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) earned her 15th career singles victory as a member of the Green & White, defeating Vanessa Canda, 6-3; 6-1.
The Broncs took a 2-1 lead in the overall match as Cyd Melendez beat freshman
Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School), 1-6; 6-3; 10-4.
The Seahawks rallied back and took the next four singles matches en route to the 5-2 victory. Junior
Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) earned her 13th career singles victory at No. 3 singles, shutting out Caitlin Gardner in straight sets.
At No. 4, Cumpa was triumphant over Amanda Binder, 6-4; 6-2 while senior
Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) earned her 22nd career singles victories, besting Scrudato, 6-2; 6-2.Â
In the final singles match of the day, sophomore
Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) was victorious over Banks, 6-1; 6-0, for her tenth career singles win.
The Seahawks welcome the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers on October 15 for an 11:00 a.m. conference match at the Wagner Tennis Courts.Â
