Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's tennis team earned its first Northeast Conference (NEC) win of the season, shutting out the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 7-0, on Saturday morning at the Wagner Tennis courts.

With the win, the Seahawks improve to 4-1, 1-0 in league play while the Terriers fall to 0-2 and 0-1 in conference action.  Today's win by Wagner improves its record to 22-2 against the Terriers all-time since 2005.

The Green & White swept through the doubles point. Sophomore Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) and freshman Melanie Post (Wilmington, NC/John T. Hoggard) blanked the Terrier pairing of Kimera Tanko Esapo/Maery Fornolles, 6-0. For Baynes/Post, it was their first win as a doubles team this season.

Senior Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) and junior Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) picked up a 6-1 victory at Flight No. 1 play over Laura Dimante/Akyi Lenjor.  Junior Carolyn Gibson (San Marcos, CA/IMG Academy [FL]) and junior transfer Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) also picked up a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Sara Bogdanovic/Andrea Rojo.

In singles play, Cumpa and Sagwal each earned straight-set victories in No. 4 and No. 1 play, respectively. Both Seahawks picked up their fourth win of the season with Sagwal improving to 16-7 in her Wagner singles career.   Freshman Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) defeated Bogdanovic in No. 2 action. Hodges picked up her 14th career singles victory after beating Rojo, 6-2; 6-0 in No. 3 singles play.  Senior Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) posted her 23rd career singles victory after blanking Tanko Esapo at No. 5 while newcomer Claire LeBlanc (Cape Carteret, NC/Croatan) earned her first collegiate victory at No. 6 singles, blanking Fornolles.

Select members of the Green & White will be in action at the upcoming ITA Regional Tournament, contested on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, CT on October 20 through October 25.
