Women’s Basketball Drops 64-44 Decision At RMU

Box Score (PDF) I Box Score (HTML)

Moon Township, PA – Junior guard Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum) notched a game-high 23 points and sophomore forward Sofia Roma (Richmond Hill, NY/Nazareth Regional) approached a triple-double with nine points, eight blocks and 10 rebounds, but the Wagner women's basketball team dropped a 64-44 contest at Robert Morris tonight at the Charles L. Sewall Center.

For Nwajei, who was coming off of a 42-point performance at Saint Francis U (SFU) on Saturday, her 23-point outing marks the fifth straight time, and eighth time overall, that she has cracked the 20-point plateau this season. The 5-8 New York City guard ranks sixth on the Seahawk all-time scoring list with 1,536 career points. She needs 30 points to pass Amanda Young for fifth place as the 2014 Hall of Fame inductee tallied 1,550 points in a career that spanned from 1995 to 1999.

The ever-improving 6-2 Roma followed her eight-point, 16-rebound effort at SFU by recording a career high in blocks while reaching double-digit rebounds for the fifth time on the year. The Seahawks' leader in rebounding (8.9 per game) and blocked shots (26), Roma's previous career high in blocks was four, which she accomplished on two occasions, most recently at Delaware State back on December 13.

Sophomore guard Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) followed a career-high 15-point outing on Saturday with seven points tonight, to go with four rebounds and a steal.

Robert Morris (RMU), which raced out to a 28-8 lead after one quarter en route to building a 45-17 halftime advantage, was led by Anna Stamolamprou, who had 18. The nation's leading three-point shooter entering the game at 55.6 percent, Stamolamprou was 5-of-8 from beyond the arc on the evening, in becoming RMU's lone double-digit scorer.

Megan Smith and Ashley Ravelli added nine and eight points, respectively, for the Colonials who held a 37.7 percent to 27.1 percent edge in shooting while out-rebounding Wagner 45-38. The Seahawks held a 22-16 margin in points in the paint and led in second-chance points, 17-12, while RMU held a 14-11 edge in points off turnovers. The effects of having just nine players available due to injury was evident in the teams' respective bench scoring where the Colonials held a sizeable 22-8 advantage.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 2-12 overall and 0-2 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Colonials, in winning their fourth straight, run their record to 8-5 on the season and 2-0 in league play. Tonight represented a milestone victory for RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia as it was career win No. 700 for the veteran mentor who announced before the season that this would be his final campaign on the Colonials' sidelines.

The Green & White next take the floor on Saturday, January 9 when they play host to the Bryant University Bulldogs in a 1:00 p.m. start at the Spiro Sports Center. As with all NEC games, Saturday's tilt can be seen live, free of charge, on necfrontrow.com with Pete Mundo providing the call courtside.
