Moon Township, PA - The Northeast Conference (NEC) opening weekend concludes on Monday evening in Moon Township, PA for the Wagner men's basketball as the Seahawks take on defending league champion Robert Morris in a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Charles L. Sewall Center following the 5:00 p.m. game between the Seahawk and Colonial women's teams.
Wagner is coming into Monday's contest looking to split the Western Pennsylvania road trip after falling to the Saint Francis University Red Flash, 73-65, on Saturday afternoon in Loretto, PA. The Colonials are looking to snap a three-game losing streak after falling 69-65 to the Sacred Heart University Pioneers, 69-65 at home on Saturday.
COMMON FOES:- During the non-conference season, the Seahawks and Colonials did not play a common opponent.
- Both teams took on members from the Atlantic10 Conference and the Patriot League.
- Wagner was 0-1 against the A-10, falling to George Mason University, 71-60. Robert Morris fell to intra-state rival, Duquesne, 72-65 back on December 19.
- Against the Patriot League, both schools earned a victory as the Seahawks defeated American University, 55-48, on December 6. The Colonials split its two meetings, falling to Bucknell, 81-76, on November 18 and picking up a 69-67 victory over Lehigh back on December 17.
SERIES VS. ROBERT MORRIS: - Monday's contest is 67th all-time meeting between Wagner and Robert Morris with the Colonials owning a 41-25 edge in the head-to-head matchup.
- Last season, these two schools met three times. The first was back on January 8 at the Spiro Sports Center on Staten Island and broadcasted live on CBS Sports Network in which the Colonials edged out the Seahawks, 77-73, despite Wagner having three players in double-figures, led by Marcus Burton's team-high 21 points. Corey Henson had 16 points while Romone Saunders added 12 in 35 minutes of play.
- The next two meetings came within a week of each other and both in Moon Township, as the Colonials picked up a 91-59 victory on February 26 and eliminated Wagner from the 2015 NEC Tournament on March 4 with a 91-68 victory.
WAGNER ALL-TIME VS. THE NORTHEAST CONFERENCE:- All-time, Wagner is 279-309 against teams in the Northeast Conference.
- The 279 wins are the fourth-highest total among the ten-team conference, trailing Robert Morris (336), Fairleigh Dickinson (310), and LIU Brooklyn (283).
- Fourth-year head coach Bashir Mason is 32-21 all-time in conference games, ranking 11th all-time in league history.
WAGNER ALL-TIME VS. PENNSYLVANIA DIVISION I SCHOOLS:- Wagner holds an all-time mark of 92-117 (.440) against Division I programs from the Quaker State.
- Of the 13 Division I programs, Wagner has faced 12 programs, the lone exception is Duquesne.
- The Seahawks hold a winning record against two of these schools: Bucknell (8-4) and Lehigh (12-7).
SCOUTING THE ROBERT MORRIS UNIVERSITY COLONIALS:- The Colonials, a year removed from winning the 2015 Northeast Conference championship, are just 2-12 on the year and 0-1 in conference play.
- RMU opened its NEC schedule with a 69-65 loss to Sacred Heart on Saturday. Kavon Stewart paced the Colonials with a career-high 19 points and added six assists and three steals.
- Rodney Pryor, the NEC's leading scorer at 21.3 ppg, finished with 16 points and nine rebounds while newcomer Isaiah Still scored 10 points and grabbed three rebounds.
- Elijah Minnie, who leads the Northeast Conference in blocks per game (1.77) is shooting 52.7 percent inside the arc, but 51 percent of his shots from the field have come from beyond the three-point line.
- RMU ranks fourth in the circuit in Field Goal Percentage, shooting 41.5 percent from the floor.
ROBERT MORRIS HEAD COACH ANDREW TOOLE:- In five seasons under Toole's tutelage, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 112-77 (.593), including a mark of 65-24 (.730) against Northeast Conference opponents.
- Toole guided Robert Morris to an overall record of 20-15 (.571) in 2014-15, including a mark of 12-6 (.667) in the NEC. The Colonials finished in a tie for second place with Bryant in the league standings and as the No. 2 seed claimed the 2015 NEC Tournament title with a 66-63 win at No. 1 seed St. Francis Brooklyn (3/10/15). The win over the Terriers helped RMU secure its league-high eighth NEC Tournament title and subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament.
- Robert Morris earned its first NCAA Tournament victory since 1983 and second overall in program history by posting an 81-77 victory over North Florida (3/18/15) as part of the 2015 NCAA First Four at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. Two days later the Colonials fell to eventual 2015 national champion Duke (3/20/15), 85-56, in Charlotte, N.C.
- During Toole's five seasons as head coach at RMU, the Colonials have claimed two NEC regular-season championships (2013, 2014), appeared in four NEC Tournament championship games (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015) and have made four national postseason appearances. Robert Morris played in its first CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) in 2012, earned automatic bids to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in both 2013 and 2014 and appeared in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
- Named an assistant coach under former head coach Mike Rice in 2007, Toole was elevated to associate head coach the following season before taking over the reigns as head coach in 2010.
NATIONAL STATISTICS:- Through games 1/2/16, Wagner ranks among the top-100 in the NCAA in eight statistical categories while ranking among the top-50 in three categories.
- Wagner is 23rd in Turnovers Forced (16.25), 32nd in Steals Per Game (8.3), 26th in Offensive Rebounds Per Game (14.0), 58th in Scoring Defense (65.3), 63rd in Free-Throw Percentage (72.6), 75th in Rebounding Margin (5.0), 91st in Total Steals (100) and 95th in Total Rebounds Per Game (38.83).
- Individually, Michael Carey ranks 69th in Rebounds Per Game (8.6), 90th in Offensive Rebounds Per Game (2.92) and 92nd in Defensive Rebounds Per Game (5.67).
- Dwaun Anderson is 79th in Steals Per Game (1.8).
- Corey Henson is 33rd in Three-PT FG Percentage (45.0), 35th in Three-PT FG Per Game (3.0) and and 83rd in Total 3PT FGM (36).
RPI RISING:- As of 1/3/16, Wagner stood at 7-5; 0-1 NEC
- Two of the four setbacks coming against teams in the top 60 RPI rankings (#14 Monmouth and #36 Seton Hall).
- Wagner has losses against teams among the top-200 RPI, namely #178 George Mason and #204 St. John's.
- Among Northeast Conference (NEC) schools, the Seahawks are the highest ranked team at #170, followed by #203 Fairleigh Dickinson, #260 Saint Francis U and #263 Bryant.
