Wagner College moves into first-place tie in NEC with big 83-59 road win at St. Francis Brooklyn (Cormac Gordon, Staten Island Advance)

Brooklyn Heights, NY – Three Seahawks finished in double figures, led by sophomore guard Corey Henson's (Upper Marlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic) game and career-high 25 points as Wagner earned an impressive 83-59 win over the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season champions, the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers on Thursday evening.

The Seahawks improve to 12-6, 5-2 in league play after picking up their fifth win in the last six games. St. Francis Brooklyn falls to 7-13, 3-4 in conference action. Tonight's victory marked a milestone for the fourth-year head coach, Bashir Mason, as the second-youngest coach in Division I picked up his 60th career win, and now improves to 10 games over .500 (60-50).

Henson knocked down a career-high nine field goals on 13 attempts, including a sizzling 5-of-6 effort from three-point range. Junior guard Michael Carey (Nassau, Bahamas/Lamar Consolidated [San Jacinto College] registered his seventh career double-double and third consecutive after finishing with a career-best 17 points and game-high 12 rebounds.  Redshirt senior forward Mike Aaman (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan [University of Rhode Island]) came within one rebound of his fifth career double-double, as the 6-8 forward added 12 points and nine rebounds in his 25 minutes of play.

Chris Hooper led St. Francis Brooklyn with 22 points, 14 of which coming in the second half.  Tyreek Jewell and Yunus Hopkinson each ended the game with eight points on a combined 5-of-18 shooting from the floor.

Wagner opened the contest scoring seven of the game's first 10 points before St. Francis Brooklyn came back using an 8-2 run of its own in taking an 11-9 lead with 15:22 left in the first half.

After a Jon Doss three-pointer had given the Terriers a 16-13 lead, the Seahawks erupted on a 26-9 run over the next nine minutes in surging to a comfortable 39-25 lead with 4:22 remaining in the frame.

Wagner shot an efficient 10-of-14 from the field during the run while converting 2-of-3 from the outside while the swarming Seahawk defense held the Terriers to just 3-of-14 during this span. Henson and Carey were the catalysts, scoring 10 of the 26 points during the stretch. St. Francis Brooklyn ended the half on an 8-3 spurt to cut the deficit to 43-33 at the intermission.

The Terriers used a 10-6 run over the first five minutes of the second half that trimmed the Wagner lead to just six, 49-43, as Hooper was able to muscle in a left-handed layup off the feed from Hopkinson. It would be the closets Wagner allowed the home team to get, as the Green & White scored 34 of the game's final 50 points to leave Brooklyn Heights with its first win in five chances against the Terriers.

The Seahawks shot a season-best 55.2 percent from the floor while limiting St. Francis Brooklyn to 40.7 percent shooting. Additionally, the Seahawks scored 44 of their 83 points from inside the paint. For the eighth straight game, Wagner held a sizeable advantage on the glass, as the visitors were a +13 in the rebounding department, 40-27 edge.

Wagner returns home to meet Sacred Heart on Saturday, January 23 at 4:00 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the Seahawk and Pioneer women's teams to tip off at 1:00 p.m.
