Wagner College To Face Reigning NEC Regular-Season Champ St. Francis Brooklyn (Cormac Gordon, Staten Island Advance)

Brooklyn Heights, NY - The Wagner men's basketball team, winners of four of its last five games, takes the short trip across the Verrazano Bridge into Brooklyn Heights as they square off against the 2015 Northeast Conference (NEC) regular-season champions, the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers on Thursday evening.

Wagner (11-6; 4-2 NEC) improved to 7-1 at the Spiro Sports Center this season after earning a 70-48 victory over Central Connecticut this past Saturday afternoon. St. Francis Brooklyn (7-12; 3-3 NEC) enters Thursday night's contest winners of three of its last four games, as the Terriers secured an 85-67 victory over Sacred Heart at home this past Saturday.

INSIDE THE SERIES:
  • Thursday evening's contest between Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn marks the 93rd all-time meeting between the two schools with St. Francis Brooklyn holding a 53-39 edge in the head-to-head series.
  • This series is one of the longest in Wagner's history as the two New York schools, separated by the Verrazano Bridge and a mere 30-minute car ride on I-278, first started back on January 12, 1929, when the Terriers defeated Wagner, 37-14.
  • Wagner is looking to snap a five-game losing streak against the Terriers. The Seahawks were last victorious over its Brooklyn rival back on January 19, 2012, when the Green & White earned a 73-61 victory at the Pope Physical Education Center.
  • Last season, St. Francis Brooklyn took both meetings, defeating the Seahawks 66-51 on February 7 on Staten Island and five days later, 83-66, in Brooklyn Heights, NY

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS:
  • St. Francis Brooklyn was the talk of New York City hoops last year, as the Terriers came within an eyelash of claiming the program's first NEC championship after securing the regular season title.
  • SFBK matched its program single-season record with 23 wins and reached the postseason for the first time in 52 years with an appearance in the Postseason NIT.
  • The Terriers, who no longer have the services of last season's Player of the Year, Jalen Cannon, the conference's all-time leading rebounder. Also, SFBK doesn't have point guard Brent Jones, as he along with Cannon, graduated.
  • This year's Terriers are led by senior guard Tyreek Jewell, who is averaging 13.3 ppg in 19 games, and since NEC-play began, Jewell has been SFBK's "jewel," averaging 16.2 ppg, which ranks him fifth in conference-only games.
  • As a whole, St. Francis Brooklyn ranks second in scoring defense (67.4 ppg), third in field-goal percentage defense (.443), rebounding offense (36.6), rebounding defense (35.2) and first in blocked shots at 4.84 per game, with Amdy Fall, rejecting 1.89 per game.

COMMON FOES:
  • Between Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn, there is one common opponent between the two from the non-conference schedule, St. John's.
  • Wagner opened up the season at Carnesecca Arena on November 13, falling to the Red Storm, 66-57.  St. Francis Brooklyn squared off against St. John's at "The World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden, as part of the ECAC Holiday Festival, suffered a 63-56 setback, back on December 6.
  • Among NEC competition, both teams have played Saint Francis U, Robert Morris, Bryant and Sacred Heart.  Both Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn are 3-1 against these four opponents.

WAGNER ALL-TIME VS. NEW YORK DIVISION I SCHOOLS:
  • Wagner holds an all-time mark of 159-308 against all New York State Division I-based schools.
  • The 21 schools are Albany, Army, Binghamton, Buffalo, Canisius, Colgate, Columbia, Cornell, Fordham, Hofstra, Iona, LIU Brooklyn, Manhattan, Marist,Niagara, St. Bonaventure, St. Francis Brooklyn, St. John's, Siena, Stony Brook and Syracuse.
  • There are only three schools from the Empire State that Wagner has yet to face in its history; Binghamton, Canisius, and Colgate.
