Results Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to the Siena Saints, 6-1, on Sunday morning from the Wagner Tennis Courts.
With the loss, the Seahawks stand at 2-1 on the year while the Saints picked up its first victory of the season (1-0).
Siena was able to clinch the first point of the match by taking No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. Wagner avoided the three-match sweep out of the No. 1 position as the tandem of senior
Marina Rull Valvieso (Barcelona, Spain/IES Anthony Cumella [Tarleton State]) and junior transfer
Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) blanked the pairing of Ali Garrity and Mitsuki Fukamachi, 6-0.
In singles action, Sagwal, who claimed the Hofstra Invitational "B" Singles Championship on Saturday, improved to 6-0 overall on the year and 3-0 in dual matches after defeating Fukamachi, 6-3; 7-5 in No. 3 singles action.
The Saints picked up a back-and-forth win at No. 1 as Rull Valvieso wasn't able to complete the comeback attempt in the tiebreaker, falling 5-7; 6-0; 10-6.
The Seahawks will be back in action on September 22, as they travel to West Long Branch, NJ to tangle with their fourth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school, the Monmouth University Hawks.
