ResultsStaten Island, NY – The Wagner men's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory in its first Northeast Conference (NEC) match of the season against local rival, St. Francis Brooklyn.
The Seahawks, under first-year head coach
Jason Sinkoff, improve to 3-0 on the season while the Terriers fall to 0-1 on the season.
"Today was our first home match of the year and also our first NEC match of the season and everyone competed hard and played good, consistent tennis," commented Sinkoff. "We have worked hard in practice to be prepared for the close matches, and it showed as
Juan Alanis (Mexico City, Mexico/K12 International Academy) was able to step up in a big moment and win an 18-16 thrilling tiebreaker. Between the thrill of the match and the energy from the crowd on hand, it was tremendous to receive that much support from our home fans. It was a loud and fun atmosphere."
The Seahawks captured the first overall point of the match after only dropping a set in the two doubles matches of the afternoon. The freshmen pairing of
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) improve to 2-0 as a duo as they edged Martin Bedecarratz and Milos Vukicevic.
Sophomore
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and freshman
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) also improve to 2-0 as a pairing after ousting Sacha Singh and Alex Bosch in No. 2 doubles. The Green & White won at No. 3 doubles via default.
In singles action, Alanis put forth the most dramatic comeback win of the season after dropping the first set, 4-6 to Bedecarratz. Alanis was able to regain momentum and take the second set, 6-2 before embarking on a 18-16 thriller in the tiebreaker.
Sandy, Poland and Boyd each recorded straight-set victories in No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles action, respectively. Knepplehout and sophomore
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) earned victories via default.
The men's team will be back in action on Sunday, September 20 as the Seahawks welcome Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe, Siena, to Staten Island for a 1:00 pm match.
