Dover, DE – The Wagner women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the Delaware State Hornets on Friday evening at Alumni Stadium. With the tie, the Seahawks stop a three-match losing streak as they move to 1-5-1 on the season while the Hornets stand at 1-4-1.
"I thought we battled hard tonight and played well at times but did not put our shots on frame which makes it hard to find goals," said head coach
Mike Minielli. "We do well to get in but do not finish plays with shots on frame which causes keepers to have it too easy against us."
Delaware State got off to a quick start when Samantha Bahr found Taylor Love for the contest's first goal as she was able to put a fast one past Seahawks goalkeeper
Kaitlin Flaherty (Southfield, MI / Wylie Groves) in the 6th minute of the contest.
Wagner struck back four minutes later as junior midfielder
Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL / Mariner) netted her third goal of the season. Junior midfielder
Taylor Sackaris (St. James, NY / Smithtown East) was credited with the assist, her second of the season.
From there, neither team was able to get many attempts towards the net for the remainder of the half, despite both squads recording 10 shots in the first half to just five in the second stanza.
The contest then went into two 10-minute overtimes where neither team capitalized on opportunities as the contest finished in a tie. In the first overtime, the Seahawks and Hornets each posted three shots a piece.
During the second half of overtime, Delaware State was able to get off three shots while Wagner couldn't get a strong offensive pattern going.
Flaherty closed with four saves, while the Hornets held a 15-9 shot advantage through the entire contest. Of the nine Seahawk shots, only one was on goal.
The Seahawks return to action at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, when they host UMass Lowell at Hameline Field.
