Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team fell to America East foe, UMass Lowell, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at soggy Hameline Field. With the loss, the Seahawks drop to 1-6-1 on the season while the River Hawks picked up their first win of 2015 and now sport a 1-5 record.
UMass Lowell struck first in the eighth minute of the match, a sequence that began when junior Carolyn Ragon was up close in the box and took a strong shot that caused a scramble in front of the net. Sophomore Shannon Groffie got hold of the ball off the rebound and sank a quick shot to make it 1-0. Ragon was credited with the assist.
Despite trailing by that 1-0 score at the intermission, the Seahawks outshot the River Hawks 8-4 in the first half.
In the second half, Wagner added two more shots, with the most dangerous chance coming when senior forward
Samantha Jensen (Ocean Gate, NJ / Central Regional), after receiving a pass from junior
Sydney McNutt (Hatboro, PA / Hatboro-Horsham) at the 15-yard line, made a tough shot that was saved by UMass Lowell goalkeeper Julia Schneider.
The Seahawks finished with 10 shots on the afternoon, four on goal, while the River Hawks posted eigh shotst, sending four on goal as well. .

Kaitlin Flaherty (Southfield, MI / Wylie Groves) went the distance between the pipes for the Seahawks, making four saves.
Wagner returns to the field at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday when the Seahawks host Hartford at Hameline Field.
