Orono, ME –
The Wagner women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Fairfield University today at the University of Maine tournament. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-2 on the season.

Strong Wagner offense took control in the first half of the match when senior forward Samantha Jensen (Ocean Gate, NJ / Central Regional) put a shot on goal that ricocheted off the goalie right to sophomore Jackie Otake (Portland, CT / Portland) who was able to put it past the goalkeeper for the Seahawks first goal of the 2015 season. The sophomore's goal in the 11th minute marks her first collegiate goal.

"Jackie's goal was really nice because we got a ball through," said head coach Mike Minielli. "Sam Jensen got on the end of it, there was a little bit of a scramble in front of the goal and Otake was right there to put it in. That's exactly what we've been preaching to them about following it up and getting quality balls in and we just need to do more of it"

A solid defense from juniors Amanda Buck (Bay Shore, NY / Islip), Tori Rodriguez (Mission Viejo, CA / Capistrano Valley) and Gabrielle Davis (Freehold, NJ / Freehold Township) along with freshman Peyton Beck (St. Louis, MO / Webster Groves) kept the Seahawks to a 1-0 lead throughout most of the first half until Fairfield got on the scoreboard in the 42nd minute off of a shot to right corner of the net from Fairfield's Karolyn Collins.

Fairfield opened the second half with a goal in the 48th minute from Collins, her second goal of the day, to make it a 2-1 lead. This would be the final goal of the contest as the Seahawks' offense was unable to capitalize in the second half.

"We're disappointed we lost but we thought we did a lot of things well. We played much better than we did on Friday, we have a lot of younger players getting in and getting experience right now." Minielli commented. "We have to be just a little bit better with what we are doing on the offensive end and avoid the mistake on the defensive end because that's kind of what beat us. We didn't finish and made a critical mistake and gave up an open shot and that's the game. We just have to work on fixing that."

Junior Katelyn Murphy (Metuchen, NJ / Metuchen) made her first collegiate start as goalkeeper recording a career-high eight saves.

Wagner returns to action on Wednesday, August 26, at 3:00 pm for a match at St. Peter's.
