Photo by: Katie Russell)ResultsStaten Island, NY – The Wagner women's tennis team concluded the 2014-15 regular season on Wednesday afternoon as the Seahawls defeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member Rider University 7-0 at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
With the win, first-year head coach
Adrienn Hidvegi has guided the program to its first ever winning season as the Seahawks finished the year 8-6.
Wagner swept all three doubles matches as junior
Marina Rull Valvieso (Barcelona, Spain/IES Antony Cumella [Tarleton State]) and sophomore
Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) earned an 8-5 victory at #1 doubles against Michelle Caravaglio and Kerrin Toner. For Rull Valvieso and Pautsch, it was the pairing's ninth victory of the season.
Junior
Jenna Harris (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills), freshmen
Carolyn Gibson (Windermere, FL/IMG Academy),
Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) and senior
Rachel Jurgielewicz (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) each secured victories at #2 and #3 doubles, respectively.
In singles action, Rull Valvieso improved to 9-3 in dual matches this season as she defeated Caravaglio, 6-1; 6-0. Hodges earned a 6-2; 6-3 triumph at #2 singles over Scrudato while Pautsch notched her sixth victory of the season as she defeated Kerrin Toner, 6-0; 6-3.
Jurgielewicz and Harris each won at #4 and #5 while senior
Kari Rezac (Wichita, KS/Maize) was able to come-from-behind and defeat Montana Morris, 2-6; 6-4; 10-3.
The Seahawks will be the #7 seed in the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament this weekend as they take on the #2 seed, Bryant University, on Friday, April 17 at 9:00 a.m. from the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ.
