Staten Island, NY – Junior guard
Jasmine Nwajei (Rockaway Park, NY/Murry Bergtraum) poured in a school-record 45 points but the short-handed Wagner women's basketball team dropped a 73-62 decision to Stony Brook at the Spiro Sports Center tonight.
Nwajei's 45-point outburst broke, which is the top scoring game in the nation this season, the previous school record of 43 points set by Stephanie Samuels nearly 30 years ago, on February 18, 1986, at Fairleigh Dickinson. The 5-8 New York City guard's previous career high was 40 vs. Columbia (12/30/14), an outing that helped her become the nation's second-leading scorer last season at 24.8 points per game.
Wagner dressed just nine players as the Seahawks were again without the services of their second and third-leading scorers in senior guard
Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) and fifth-year senior guard
Alexis Smith (Medford, NY/St. John the Baptist/Illinois), as well as freshman guard
Julia McClure (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus), each of whom are nursing injuries.
With the loss, which snapped the Seahawks' two-game home winning streak, Wagner falls to 2-7 on the season while the Seawolves, improve to 6-5.
Senior Brittany Snow finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds and junior Christa Scognamiglio added 17 points and 13 rebounds to Stony Brook. Joining Snow and Scognamiglo in double digit rebounds was freshman Ogechi Anyagaligbo who hauled in a career-high 19 to help the Seawolves to a 59-29 advantage on the glass.
For Wagner, sophomore guard
Tanasia Russell (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and junior guard
Lyndsay Rowe (South River, NJ/St. John Vianney) added six points apiece while junior forward
Jackie Dluhi (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) led the Seahawks in rebounding with six.
Stony Brook led by a narrow 29-24 count at the break before outscoring Wagner 31-18 in the third quarter, capped by a three-point basket at the buzzer by Davion Wingate which staked the Seawolves to a comfortable 60-42 lead heading to the fourth.
The visitors, who avenged last season's 76-70 loss at Wagner, held a 34-20 edge in points in the paint while out-shooting the Seahawks 44%-32%.
Nwajei moved into eighth place on the Wagner all-time career scoring list with 1,417 points. She is 13 points shy of passing
Chris Anderson (1988-1992), who totaled 1,429 points during her Hall of Fame career.
The Green & White swing back into action on Monday, December 21 when they travel to Philadelphia to meet the University of Pennsylvania at the historic Palestra. Tip off between the Seahawks and the Quakers is set for 1:00 p.m.
This marked the 11th all-time meeting between the Seahawks and the Seawolves and the Green & White lead the series, 8-3. Tonight's matchup was also the 40th time that Wagner faced a team that is a current America East member and the Seahawks are now 17-23 overall in these games.
