Wagner College Must Stop Monmouth Run Game (Cormac Gordon, Staten Island Advance)

West Long Branch, NJ -  After a thrilling, game-winning, slam dunk by redshirt senior guard Dwaun Anderson (Suttons Bay, MI/Suttons Bay [Michigan State]) on Tuesday evening lifted Wagner to a 65-64 win at Rider on Wednesday, the Seahawks will look for their sixth straight win as they take on their second straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe in the Monmouth University Hawks on Sunday afternoon.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The current Seahawk winning streak is the longest since the 2013-14 campaign, when the Green & White won nine straight when the Seahawks closed the regular season with eight consecutive wins before tacking on a ninth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) quarterfinal round against Central Connecticut (3/5/14).
  • Monmouth garnered early national attention this season, stunning PAC-12 member UCLA on opening night back on Nov. 13, defeating the Bruins 84-81 at famed Pauley Pavilion. Six days later, the Hawks outlasted then No. 17 ranked, Notre Dame, 70-68 in the opener of the AdvoCare Invitational, held at the HP Fieldhouse at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL. Then, on Nov. 29, Monmouth earned its second win over a PAC-12 school, knocking off USC, 83-73, in third-place game of the AdvoCare Invitational, a win that avenged 101-90 loss to the Trojans on Nov.16.
  • The Seahawks and Hawks, former longtime rivals in the Northeast Conference (NEC) will be meeting for the 60th time, with Monmouth holding a 33-26 edge in the head-to-head series that dates back to January 7, 1984.

SCOUTING THE MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY HAWKS:
  • Two Hawks are averaging double-digits in scoring, led by Justin Robinson's 22.5 ppg, which ranks 12th in the nation as of 12/10/15.  Robinson, logging 32.9 minutes a contest, is also averaging 3.1 rpg and 2.9 apg while converting on 92.6 percent from the free-throw line. Micah Seaborn checks in at14.1 ppg while logging 29.1 mpg.  Deon Jones is the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 7.0 caroms a contest for the Hawks.
  • Monmouth ranks fifth in the MAAC, scoring 77.6 ppg., while ranking sixth in scoring defense, allowing 76.0 ppg.  The Hawks lead the conference in free-throw percentage (81.5%); turnover margin (+2.9) while ranking among the top-three in field goal percentage defense (2nd; 41.2%); three-point field goal percentage (3rd; 35.8%); three-point field goal percentage defense (3rd; 31.0%); blocked shots (3rd; 4.1); steals (2nd; 8.1) and defensive rebounds (2nd; 28.5).

LAST TIME OUT FOR MONMOUTH:
  • Monmouth led wire-to-wire in defeating Niagara, 56-42, to earn its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) victory of the season.
  • Micah Seaborn was one of two Hawks to finish in double-figures, scoring 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting while pulling down four rebounds in 28 minutes of action.
  • Deon Jones contributed 11 points and a team-leading six caroms in the victory for the Hawks.

SERIES HISTORY:
  • Sunday's contest between the Seahawks and the Hawks marks the 60th head-to-head battle, with Monmouth leading 33-26.
  • Wagner has held the upper hand of late, going 8-2, over its last 10 games against the Hawks, including a 4-1 mark in West Long Branch, NJ, over the same time period.
  • Last season, Monmouth defeated the Green & White, 74-66 on Grymes Hill, snapping a Seahawk six-game winning streak over the Hawks and handing Wagner its first home defeat of the season.

WAGNER ALL-TIME VS. THE METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE:
  • All-time, Wagner holds a 95-208 record against teams that are current members of the MAAC.
  • The lone school that Wagner hasn't played from the conference is Canisius.
  • Sunday's contest at Monmouth marks the second straight MAAC opponent that the Seahawks will meet this season.
  • The MAAC tour concludes on December 18 in Fairfield, CT when the Seahawks meet the Stags at 7:00 pm at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT.

ANDERSON'S GAME-WINNING SLAM DUNK EARNS NO. 5 ON #SCTOP10:
  • Following a missed three-point from sophomore guard Corey Henson (Upper Marlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic) in the closing moments of Tuesday's contest at Rider, redshirt senior guard Dwaun Anderson (Suttons Bay, MI/Suttons Bay [Michigan State]), in traffic, was left unguarded as he soared over a host of players from both teams to slam home the putback jam.
  • In giving Wagner its fifth straight win, Anderson's game-winner garnered the No. 5 spot on Tuesday evening's ESPN Sportscenter's Top-10, marking the fifth time in Anderson's career that one of his dunks has been showcased on the "Worldwide Leader in Sports"™

#SOCIALMEDIAHAWKS:
  • Sunday's contest between Wagner and Monmouth, which will be streamed live on ESPN3, will not only pit two programs that know each other well throughout their program histories, but has extra momentum, thanks in large part to social media.
  • Anderson's aforementioned game-winning dunk, has 5,929 views on YouTube as of Dec. 10. When Sportscenter tweeted out the video, captioning "This is how you win a game with authority," the video garnered 1,078 likes and 641 retweets as of December 11.
  • Monmouth, which has defeated three power five teams since the season began on November 13, has been nationally acclaimed for its bench, specifically Daniel Pillari, Greg Noack, Tyler Robinson and Louie Pillari.  They have earned a reputation for their entertaining and thought-out reactions to the in-game success the Hawks have had, and everyone has taken notice, from USA Today, to ESPN, CBS Sports, Bleacher Report, Barstool Sports along with professional and college athletes, who have coined them the "most popular bench in America."
  • Both videos of Anderson's dunk and the Monmouth bench celebrations racked in a total of 538,958 combined views on YouTube as of Dec. 11. One thing is for certain, this afternoon's contest is definitely #onetowatch.
