With the win, the Seahawks improve to 5-11-1 (4-3 NEC) and stay alive for a chance to make back-to-back NEC tournament appearances, while the Pioneers fall to 4-13-0 (1-7 NEC).
Prior to the start of the match, Seahawk seniors
Samantha Jensen (Ocean Gate, NJ/Central Regional),
Johanna Konrad (Volkach, Germany/LSH), and
Victoria Roda (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) and the Sacred Heart seniors were recognized for their hard work throughout their collegiate careers.
The game was a back-and-forth affair as neither of the two teams were able to execute on an opportunity to hop on the score board throughout the entire first half. Sacred Heart edged Wagner by one shot in the first half (9-8), but stellar goaltending by freshman goalkeeper
Katie Viscardi (Hazlet,NJ/Mater Dei Prep), who made a career-high seven saves in the first half while the other two shots were high and wide, denied any chance for the Pioneers.
Viscardi picked up her third consecutive shutout of the season, coming up with three incredible game-saving stops. Throughout her entire 90 minutes between the pipes the New Jersey product recorded nine saves en route to recording her third collegiate clean sheet.
It was the Seahawks' who capitalized on an opportunity in the 62nd minute when junior midfielder
Taylor Sackaris (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) took an advantage of a wide open left side of the field, dribbled the ball up and lofted a shot into the SHU box to freshman forward
Sandra Battista (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy). Battista waited for the bounce after the ball landed and kneed the ball right past Sacred Heart goalkeeper Talia Schwartz to the right side, netting the eventual game-winning goal and her second marker of the season.
Wagner concluded the game outshooting Sacred Heart 15-13, Battista leading with three shots on goal.
The Green & White will return to action on Sunday, November 1 for the crucial and final NEC matchup against Central Connecticut. With a road victory against the Blue Devils, the Seahawks will clinch a berth to the NEC tournament for the second year in a row, after going for the first time since 1997 last year. Kickoff is slated for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
