Box Score (PDF) I Box Score (HTML)Emmitsburg, MD – The Wagner women's soccer team picked up a crucial 1-0 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory over Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks swept the weekend, picking up two conference games to improve to 3-3 in the league and 4-11-1 overall. Mount St. Mary's drops to 3-13-2 and 2-3-2 in the NEC.
"I am very proud of the girls for finding a way to win this one," said head coach
Mike Minielli. "We were coming off a high energy game Friday, then had to travel, and then just played a team that brought a ton of energy [Mount St. Mary's]. Today was a ground it out game with heavy legs, the kind of game you have to win if you want to get into the NEC tournament."
After a gritty back and forth game throughout the first half, neither the Mountaineers nor the Seahawks could crack the scoreboard. Strong possessions on both teams allowed Wagner to put up seven shots and Mount St. Mary's with five in the first 45 minutes.
It was junior midfielder
Amber Coca (Riverview, FL/Bloomingdale) who scored the lone goal of the game in the 66th minute when she took a corner kick. The ball deflected off the hands off Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Rachel Bourne into the goal to make it 1-0.
Seahawk freshman goalkeeper
Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ/Mater Dei Prep) posted her second consecutive shutout, after recording her first collegiate one on Friday in a 2-0 victory over Saint Francis U. The freshman registered six saves throughout the 90 minutes of play.
Wagner outshot Mount St. Mary's by a 13-9 count overall.
The Green & White will return to conference action at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30 when they host Sacred Heart on Hameline Field. At Friday's game, the three Seahawk seniors,
Samantha Jensen (Ocean Gate, NJ/Central Regional),
Johanna Konrad (Volkach, Germany/LSH), and
Victoria Roda (Staten Island, NY/Petrides) will be honored for senior day.
