Teaneck, NJ – A late goal from junior midfielder
Taylor Sackaris (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) proved to be not enough as the Wagner women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Fairleigh Dickinson this afternoon.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 2-11-1 and 1-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while helping Fairleigh Dickinson remain undefeated in conference play (5-0) and improve to 11-5 overall.
The Knight's controlled much of the ball throughout the first half as they outshot the Seahawks 11-1. The first goal came in the eighth minute, Fairleigh Dickinson's Esther Rochon scored from eight yards out off of a feed from Patricia Seitz. Rochon then set up a pass to FDU's Carly Tice in the 17th minute. Wagner goalkeeper
Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ/Mater Dei Prep) came running out to try to get the ball but Tice was able get around her and score on an open net. The score remained 2-0 at the completion of the first half.
The second half started out shaky for Wagner as the Knight's scored just four minutes into it to take a 3-0 lead. Tice scored her second of the day with a header off a corner kick from Jessi Reinhardt.
Sackaris stopped a possible Knight shutout in the 73rd minute when she put one past FDU goalkeeper Deanna Persico. Senior midfielder
Johanna Konrad (Volkach, Germany/LSH) dribbled the ball down the field and tried to make a cross in the FDU box when Persico ran out to try to grab the ball. The ball deflected off Persico to Sackaris who drilled a shot to the back of an open net to make it a 3-1 match.
Wagner found more opportunities in the second half as they outshot the Knights' 6-4. Senior forward
Samantha Jensen (Ocean Gate, NJ/Central Regional) fed a pass to Konrad, who made a tough low shot to a wide open left side of the net, but it hit the post and bounced out.
Viscardi played the entire 90 minutes, posting six saves, which doubled the amount of saves from Persico and starting FDU goalkeeper Felicia Burr combined.
The Seahawks return to the turf next Friday, October 23, when they host Saint Francis U. for another league game. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
