Staten Island, NY – Two goals from senior midfielder
Johanna Konrad (Volkach, Germany/LSH) and freshman forward
Sandra Battista (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) lifted the Wagner women's soccer team 2-0 over Northeast Conference (NEC) member Saint Francis University on Friday evening.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 3-11-1 and 2-3 in conference play while the Red Flash fall to 4-11-1 and 4-2 in the NEC.
"The girls played with a real purpose and urgency we have been lacking at some times," said head coach
Mike Minielli. "The shutout was huge for the team as it is our first of the year and comes on the heels of a rough stretch. A great way for them to bounce back. This win shows the character and spirit the girls have, I am proud of them."
Freshman goalkeeper
Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ/Mater Dei Prep) played the entire 90 minutes between the pipes, posting eight saves en route to recording her first collegiate shutout.
The Seahawks struck first late in the first half to make it 1-0 heading into the second half. Junior midfielder
Amber Coca (Riverview, FL/Bloomingdale) was granted a free kick that she placed in the right in the SFU box. Junior midfielder
Gabrielle Davis (Freehold,NJ/Freehold Township) saw the ball coming in, flicked it backwards with her head to Konrad who ran in from the back post to make the shot right past SFU goalkeeper Romina Kunz. The 34th minute goal was Konrad's second of the season while Davis and Coca were granted with the assists.
Just eight minutes in the second half, Battista found herself in the right place at the right time. Konrad dribbled the ball up the right side of the field and made a cross pass into the box. Junior midfielder
Taylor Sackaris (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) caught the pass and punched it out of two Red Flash defenders to an open Battista who found the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead.
A strong defensive line of freshman
Peyton Beck (St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves), junior's
Amanda Buck (Bay Shore, NY/Islip) and
Tori Rodriguez (Mission Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley) along with senior
Victoria Roda (Staten Island, NY/Petrides), in front of Viscardi, minimized the amount of opportunities from the Red Flash to secure the shutout.
Despite being outshot by the Red Flash 18-11, the Seahawks created several opportunities on the turf tonight while 17 players saw action. The 11 Wagner shots came from six different players, senior
Samantha Jensen () leading with four.
