Post Game Interview (Senior Guard Marcus Burton - with Joey Wahler)

Mount St. Mary's vs. Wagner Highlights

Staten Island, NY - Senior guard Marcus Burton (Charlotte, NC/David W. Burton) poured in a career-high 38 points and Wagner overcame a 15-point second-half deficit in earning an 85-83 double-overtime victory over Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference (NEC) play tonight.

In snapping a seven-game losing streak, the Seahawks improve to 3-10 on the season and even their NEC record at 1-1 while the Mountaineers fall to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in league.

For the game, Burton shot 13-of-24 from the floor, 9-of-10 from the free throw line, while pulling down six rebounds, dishing out two assists and coming up with two steals.

This wild, back and forth contest featured six lead changes and 22 ties. The game was tied at 67-67, after regulation and 78-78 after the first overtime, before Wagner outscored Mount St. Mary's 7-5 in the second OT in pulling out the 85-83 victory.

Freshman guard Romone Saunders (Temple Hills, MD/Mt. Zion Prep) added 15 points and 10 rebounds in recording his first career double-double, while junior forward Stedman Allen (Bronx, NY/Labette CC) and freshman guard Corey Henson (Upper Marlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic) chipped in nine and seven points, respectively.

The Mount was led by Gregory Graves, who tossed in 26 points while pulling down 12 rebounds while Junior Robinson and Byron Ashe added 17 and 13 points, respectively, for the Mountaineers.

To open the contest, the Seahawks raced out to a 6-0 lead while holding the defending NEC champions without a field goal for the first seven minutes, as the Mountaineers opened the contest 0-of-11 before 7-0 center Taylor Danaher was able to muscle his way into the paint for a layup at the 13:08 mark.

Wagner held a three point lead, 24-21, after Allen was able to use his 6-foot-6 inch frame to bully his way in the paint on his way up for two of his nine points in the contest. It would be the final lead for the Seahawks in the opening stanza as the Mount erupted on a 10-to-2 spurt over the final 2:21 to take a 31-26 halftime lead with Andrew Smeathers recording five points during this run, two off which came on a layup that beat the halftime horn.

For the half, Wagner was held to 25.8 shooting from the floor while connecting on just a lone three-pointer in seven attempts, with the lone trey coming from Burton, who finished the opening stanza with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor.

Mount dominated the early portion of the second half, outscoring the Seahawks 17-to-7 on 6-of-9 shooting that saw the 2014 NEC Champs take their largest lead of the game, 48-33, as Ashe capped the run with a three-pointer.

Burly 6-10 sophomore forward Nolan Long (Waterford, CT / Waterford / South Kent School, was able to flash into the paint for a two-hand jam off a pretty feed from freshman guard JoJo Cooper (Wilmington, DE/Concord) to highlight a 25-11 run of over eight minutes that found the home team within one, 59-58, following a putback by sophomore forward Greg Senat (Elmont, NY / Elmont / Marianapolis Prep).

Robinson of The Mount went one-of-two from the charity stripe to give the visitors a 60-58 edge before Burton made two from the line, tying the game at 62-62.  After corralling the loose ball off a missed three-pointer from The Mount's Charles Glover, Burton had a shot to give Wagner the lead but his layup opportunity was denied.
Ashe made one-of-two from the line, putting Mount up 63-62 with 1:56 left in regulation. On the next Wagner possession, Cooper calmly rattled in two attempts from the line, putting the Seahawks back up by one, 64-63.

Graves then converted a layup off a pass from Robinson, who then knocked down a pair of free throws,  giving the Mount a 67-64 lead with 23 seconds left in regulation.
On Wagner's ensuing possession, Saunders fired a three-pointer that hit the front iron and went out-of-bounds. Down by three with just 12 seconds left in regulation, Mount inbounded the ball to Robinson, who committed a costly turnover as Burton was able to swipe the ball away and find Cooper.

The rugged former high school quarterback took two dribbles down the lane before kicking the ball out to an open Saunders, and the 6-3 frosh knocked home the equalizer from the top of the key, bringing the Wagner faithful to their feet. Mount had a chance at the buzzer but a Chris Martin half-court heave bounded off the back iron.
In the first overtime, the Mountaineers jumped out to a four-point lead, 74-70 before Burton hit four straight from the line to tie it at 74-74. Saunders then put Wagner up two, 76-74 by hitting a heavily-contested layup in the paint.

Robinson, who finished with 17 points this evening, recorded the 10th tie of the contest, as he was able to swoop by his defender en route to tying the game at 76-76 and his teammate, Ashe, followed it with a big layup, putting the visitors up 78-76, with 33 ticks left. In the first OT.
With six seconds left, Burton connected on his 34th point of the contest with a running one-hander off the glass, knotting the game at 78-78, causing Mount to call for a timeout.
In the final overtime session, Saunders converted on a traditional three-point play after being fouled by Danaher, that gave the Seahawks a 81-78 lead at the 3:57 mark.  Graves answered back with a pair of free-throws that closed the gap to one, 81-80, with 2:23 before Burton once again put his team on his back, gaining the pass from Cooper and soaring to the hoop for two.

After senior forward Hugo Naurais (Nimes, France / Elan Chalon) was called for a foul, Graves sank both of his free-throw attempts, once again chipping the lead down to just one, 83-82. Moments later, Glover hit two from the line to tie the game at 85-85.

Following a timeout with 29 seconds to go, Chris Wray fouled the career 80.0 percent free-throw shooter. And Burton stepped to the line and sealed the victory by recording his 37th and 38th point of the evening.

For the contest, both teams shot 40.0 from the floor while Wagner found their stroke from three, converting on 5-of-16 from outside while holding Mount to just 6-of-23 for the game, including 0-of-5 in the two overtime sessions.

The Seahawks were outrebounded, 44-to-41, but scored 42 points in the paint and 24 points off 22 Mountaineers' turnovers, while erupting for 21 fast break points to just eight for the defending champions.

The Green and White will be tested in front of a nationally, televised audience as they welcome the 2014 Northeast Conference runner-ups, the Robert Morris University Colonials, to the Spiro Sports Center on Thursday, January 8, with tip-off slated for 9:00 pm on the CBS Sports Network.
