San Luis Obispo, CA - For the second-straight night, No. 8 Cal Poly used a dominating pitching performance in posting a 3-1 victory over Wagner at Baggett Stadium.
Mustang RHP Casey Bloomquist (4-0) struck out 10 to help the Mustangs improve to 16-3 on the season while the Seahawks fall to 2-10.
Pitching opposite to Bloomquist, reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Pitcher of the Week senior LHP
Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ / St. John Vianney) was equally outstanding in allowing just two runs with seven strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work.
Cal Poly opened up the scoring in the fourth inning when Jimmy Allen plated Nick Torres with a bloop double down the right field line.
Wagner rallied immediately with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore
Vaughn Champion (Galloway, NJ / Absegami) opened the inning with a single before freshman
Evan Fardella (Bartonsville, PA / Pocono Mountain East) and senior
Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) followed with bunt singles to load up the bases with no outs. Following a shallow fly out, junior
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) tied the game up at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to center field while chasing home Champion.
The Mustangs broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mark Mathias plated Brian Mundell with a RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.
In the top of the seventh, Wagner threatened as Smith was plunked before Dini drew a two-out walk. However the pair was left stranded as Bloomquist capped his impressive performance on the mound by inducing an inning-ending ground out.
Cal Poly would add to the lead with a run in the bottom of the eighth before setting down the Seahawks in order in the ninth.
Freshman
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) had a big game, going 2-for-3 with a walk to lead an eight-hit Green & White attack.
Mundell had two hits and two runs to pace Cal Poly.
In defeat, Morris (1-3) lowered his ERA to 4.91 with 15 strikeouts over 22 innings of action - all of which lead the team.
The teams will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 4:00 pm (EST).
