College Park, MD –  The Wagner College men's basketball team couldn't overcome an early Maryland surge as the Green & White dropped its season opener, 82-48, to the Terrapins on Friday evening in front a crowd of 10,015 at the XFINITY Center.

"I thought our guys played hard, I thought we fought, said third-year head coach Bashir Mason.  "There was certainly no quitting with us. I think we were just a little overwhelmed with the size and the athleticism. Maryland is a very talented team."

Leading the way for the Seahawks was sophomore forward Nolan Long (Waterford, CT/South Kent School), who tallied a career-high 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor to go along with a team-best nine rebounds, which tied his personal-best that came in a home contest vs. Northeast Conference (NEC) foe Sacred Heart on February 20, 2014.

"It felt great to finally get out there and play," commented the 6-10 second-year forward.  "Having just completed my first practice on Monday, I was excited to get out and play. Tonight was a learning experience as a team, since we have a whole new squad."

Freshman guard Corey Henson (Upper Marlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic) chipped in eight points in a return to his home state, on 3-of-7 shooting from floor, while dishing out a team-high three assists. Senior guard Marcus Burton (Charlotte, NC/David W. Butler) and junior Stedman Allen (Bronx, NY/Labette CC (Kansas), in his first game as a Seahawk, each tallied seven points on a combined 6-of-19 shooting.

Three Terrapins finished the game in double figures, led by Dez Wells, who connected for a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Teammate Jake Layman narrowly missed a double-double, ending the contest with 16 points and nine caroms, while Melo Trimble, who was recently named to the 2015 Bob Cousy Award Watch List, added 13 points in 22 minutes of action.

The Terrapins opened the contest with a 8-0 run that was highlighted by a Wells slam dunk. Freshman Romone Saunders (Temple Hills, MD/Potomac/Mt. Zion Prep) scored the first bucket of the season for the Seahawks, and of his young career, at the 16:12 mark on a mid-range jumper. After Maryland's Richaud Pack increased the home lead to15-3, Burton was able to beat his defender baseline to put in a heavily-contested layup. Wagner trimmed the lead to 12 when sophomore forward Greg Senat (Elmont, NY/Marianapolis Prep) muscled his way in for a layup off of a feed from Henson, cutting the lead to 23-11. The Terrapins then embarked on a a 21-6 run to close out the half with a 43-17 lead, while holding the Seahawks to three made field goals.

Maryland took its largest lead of the contest, 73-35, after Layman converted a pair of free throws. The young Seahawk team was able to string together a few opportunities during a second half where they were outscored by just an eight-point margin (39-31), highlighted by one 60-second stretch when Long scored seven of his 13 points. Wagner showed resiliency during the latter stages of the game, causing three Maryland turnovers that led to four straight points for the visitors.

For the game, the Seahawks were held to 26.9-percent shooting from the floor while grabbing 35 total rebounds. Maryland converted on 54.5 percent from the floor, including 50.0-percent marksmanship from three-point range. The big and physical Terps pulled down 44 rebounds on the evening, 34 on the defensive end, while outscoring the Seahawks, 28-22, in the paint.

Wagner will travel to Columbia on Tuesday, November 18 for in a 7:00 pm tip-off at Levien Gymnasium.
