WAGNER VS. MARYLAND - ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The Seahawks travel to College Park, MD to take on the University of Maryland, which is competing in its first season as a member of the Big 10 Conference. The Terrapins were a member of the ACC since that league's inception in 1953.
  • Friday evening's contest is just the third all-time meeting between the two schools, with the Terrapins holding a 2-0 lead in the all-time series.
  • This series first started during the 1980-81 season, when Maryland defeated the Green & White, 96-73 on December 5, 1980 in the opening round of the Carrier Classic in Syracuse, NY.
  • The 1980 meeting between Wagner and Maryland featured a coaching matchup of  P.J. Carlesimo vs. Charles "Lefty" Dreissel. Carlesimo later went on to coach Seton Hall where he led the Pirates to the 1989 NCAA Championship game. Dreissel coached at Maryland from 1969-1986 and is the only Division I head basketball coach to win at least 100 games at four different institutions - Davidson, Maryland, James Madison and Georgia St.
  • The last time these two schools squared off was back on January 4, 2003, in which the Seahawks were defeated 79-57 despite a team-high 26 points from Jermaine Hall.
  • The 2002-2003 Seahawk team, coached by former NC State standout Dereck Whittenburg, went 21-11 en route to the school's only Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. Maryland, under head coach Gary Williams, was the defending NCAA Champion.

THE COACHES
Wagner - Bashir Mason: 38-24, Entering Third Season
                  Overall Record (Same)
                  2013-2014: 19-12, 12-6 NEC (2nd Place)
Maryland - Mark Turgeon: 287-189, Entering Fourth Season
                   Overall Record (287-189, 16th Season)
                    2013-2014L 17-15, 9-9 ACC (T-7th Place)

WAGNER VS. THE BIG 10 CONFERENCE
  • Against current members of the Big 10, which now includes Maryland and Rutgers, the Green & White are 1-17 all-time.
  • The Seahawks' lone win came against Rutgers on December 16, 1995, in which the Seahawks escaped with an 80-78 road win over a Scarlet Knight team that was in its first season in the Big East.
  • This is the second straight year that the Seahawks are opening the season against a member of the Big 10. In the 2013-2014 lid-lifter, Wagner traveled to State College, PA where the Seahawks dropped a 74-62 decision to Penn State.

WAGNER IN SEASON OPENERS
  • Wagner is 53-40 all-time in season openers, including 21-17 mark since moving to the Division I ranks for the 1976-77 season.
  • The Seahawks are looking to snap a two-game slide in the season openers, after falling at Penn State last year, 74-62 and at Delaware State, 73-69 (OT) in the 2012-2013 opener.

WAGNER IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
  • Since 1981-82, Wagner is 168-214 in non-conference play.
  • In 2014-15, Wagner will play seven of its 11 non-conference games on the road, highlighted by games at AAC member Cincinnati, Columbia of the Ivy League, Hofstra out of the CAA, and Maryland, which will be playing its first season in the Big Ten.  The Seahawks will also travel to America East rivals Maine and Vermont while trying to avenge last season's loss to Lafayette of the Patriot League.  The Green & White will host SUNY Old Westbury in its home opener while also welcoming another Ivy League foe in Penn, as well as former NEC rivals Monmouth and Rider to Grymes Hill.

NEC MEDIA DAY – SEAHAWKS PICKED SEVENTH
  • At the third annual NEC Basketball "Social" Media Day, held at Barclays Center, the Wagner Seahawks were predicted to finish seventh in the ten-member league as voted by the league coaches.
  • Conducted annually, NEC coaches have only managed to correctly forecast the eventual league champions two times in the last 15 years.  Over the last 27 years, the coaches have proven inaccurate on 23 occasions or 85 percent of the time.

NEXT:  WAGNER VS. COLUMBIA
  • Wagner will travel to Morningside Heights as they take on the Columbia University Lions on Tuesday, November 18.
  • Game time is set for 7 p.m. ET.
