Stony Brook, NY – After a two hour and 40 minute rain and lightening delay, the Wagner women's soccer team was defeated by Stony Brook 2-1, falling to 4-1-1 on the year while Stony Brook improves to 4-2-1.
Before the inclement weather rolled in, Wagner took an early lead, when junior
Sydney McCarthy (Canton, GA / Woodstock) received a pass from fellow junior
Alyssa Azzinaro (Staten Island, NY / St. John Villa) and slipped the ball past the keeper in the eighth minute to make it a 1-0 game.
The game ran until the 26th minute, when players were called off the field due to a thunderstorm. The storm intensified, forcing an extended delay that lasted until just after 10:00 p.m. Play resumed without interruption, and the three hour, 25 minute first half concluded at 10:27 p.m.
Stony Brook came back to tie the game in the 53rd minute of play, when Larissa Nysch cut inside the box and found the top corner of the net to make it 1-1. No more than three minutes later, Stony Brook's Stella Norman drilled a free kick past the pipes from 30 yards out in the 56th minute to make it 1-2 in Stony Brook's favor. The game would remain as such until the final whistle.
All in all, the match lasted a staggering four hours and 22 minutes. Goalkeeper
Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) made seven saves in the first half and five saves in the second.
Wagner returns to the pitch this Saturday, September 14th, when they host the Jaspers of Manhattan College at Hameline Field. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
