Seahawks Improve to 18-9 With Two Sunday Wins

Lexington, VA – After a heartbreaking loss to Iona the day before, Wagner rebounded Sunday, scoring two big Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) victories against Villanova and St. Francis Brooklyn. The Seahawks improved to 18-9 on the season after beating Villanova 10-5, and beating St. Francis Brooklyn 19-5.

In the win over Villanova, Wagner trailed 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, only scoring one goal from sophomore Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA / St. Mary's).

The second quarter featured four Seahawk goals, which included one from Burdge, two from freshman Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia / Mountain Creek), and another one from Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck).

Wagner outscored Villanova 5-2 in the second half, when Burdge scored three of her game-high five goals. Goalie Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) only allowed two goals in the second half, as the senior finished the game with 10 saves and five steals.

In the victory over St. Francis Brooklyn, the Seahawks dominated from the beginning, scoring eight goals in the first quarter, four in the second, while only allowing one Terrier goal in the first half.

Burdge led the attack again for Wagner, scoring five goals and adding one assist. Rachel Burns (Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan School for Girls) had a career game, scoring four goals and adding two assists, as nine different players scored in the game for Wagner.

The 19 goals was the second highest output this season and the most the Seahawks had scored in a game since they beat Notre Dame (OH) on March 2, by a score of 20-5.

The 18-9 (3-1) Seahawks have two more MAAC contests to look forward to next weekend in Philadelphia. Wagner will battle Marist and VMI next Saturday, March 30.
