Lexington, VA – In a preview of what may be this year's MAAC Championship game, Wagner and Iona did not disappoint, as the Seahawks fell in overtime to the Gaels, 12-11. With the loss, Wagner falls to 16-9 on the season and 1-1 in MAAC play.
The Seahawks trailed the Gaels at halftime, 4-3, as Wagner got three goals from three different players.
Lily Doerfler,
Jess Lundgren, and
Michelle Greenough all found the net in the first half, while goalie
Laura Karbach stopped matched Iona goalie Marisa Gaynor with six saves.
Wagner had an active third quarter, when four different players scored goals in the frame. Lundgren and Greenough, along with
Megan Rodriguez and
Jessica Burdge all were able to score in the third, as the Seahawks and Gaels went into the fourth, tied 7-7.
Rachel Burns and
Stacy McGregor were able to both score in the fourth quarter, but Iona also slipped two goals past Karbach, sending the game to a 9-9 tie at the end of regulation.
Lundgren came up big for Wagner in the first and second overtime period, scoring both Seahawk goals. Iona was able to get goals from Amy Olsen in the first overtime period, and Taylor Silva in the second overtime period, sending the game into a sudden victory period.
It would be Iona's Olsen in the sudden victory period scoring her sixth goal of the game off of a penalty, and giving the Gaels the 12-11 victory.
Despite giving up the game-winning goal, Karbach had an exceptional game in the net, stopping 16 shots while adding one goal and one assist.
With the loss, the Seahawks are now 16-9 (1-1) on the year, and have two MAAC games left to play this weekend. Wagner will face Villanova tomorrow morning at 9:00 am, then have a 1:30 contest against St. Francis Brooklyn.
