Richmond Holds Off Wagner, 4-2

Box Score / Box Score (PDF)

Richmond, VA -
Richmond (8-2) scored four runs in the decisive third inning en route to posting a 4-2 victory over Wagner (1-4) in the second of three games at Pitt Field.

Junior RHP Ryan Casey (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) blanked the Spiders in five of his six frames, striking out five, against just one walk. Unfortunately, the Garden State native was saddled with the tough-luck loss, falling to 0-2 on the year, yielding four runs on seven hits over 6.0 strong innings.

Richmond garnered all the offense it would need in the third inning, scoring four times, including notching three of those runs with two outs, while recording five hits and sending eight batters to the plate.

After failing to advance a runner past second over the first five frames, the Seahawks finally broke through in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs.

Graduate student Chase Gray (Toms River, NJ / Toms River South / Seton Hall) and senior Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) each drew walks while forcing Spider LHP Zak Sterling from the game. Sophomore Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) welcomed RHP James Lively with a RBI single up the middle that plated Gray without a throw. After a fielder's choice, Keel scampered in on a wild pitch to slice what was a four-run deficit to 4-2. Unfortunately, the Green & White would be unable to further dent the scoreboard, leaving a pair of runners in scoring position.

After Casey exited the game, sophomore RHP Steven Bloodworth (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon) kept Wagner in the game, hurling 2.0 scoreless frames of one-hit ball.

However, the Seahawks would be unable to complete the comeback as Lively settled in and allowed just two runners to reach over his final three innings of work en route to notching his first save of the year.

Sterling (2-1) earned the win, allowing two runs, on four hits and a pair of walks, over 5.0 innings of work.

Six different members of the Green & White hit safely, led by Flynn and Smith, who each singled and walked.

JB Gadd was the lone player for either team to record multiple-hits, notching two of the eight Spider base knocks.

The teams will conclude their series tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
