Providence, RI - The Women's Water Polo team was able to get a win in the first game of the season, besting #20 Brown, 8-7, in the first game of the Brown Invitational.
Wagner trailed Brown 6-5 going into the fourth quarter, but goals in the final frame from freshman
Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD / Broadneck), junior
Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson), and sophomore
Jessica Burdge (Stockton, CA / St. Mary's) proved to be the difference maker.
The Seahawks took a 4-3 lead going into the half, with three of the goals coming off of drawn exclusions by sophomore
Rachel Burns (Greenlane, Auckland, New Zealand / Diocesan School for Girls). Burns finished the game with six drawn exclusions and three assists.
Burdge came up big for Wagner, scoring three goals in the game, including the difference maker in the fourth quarter. Also showing up big was Doerfler, who tallied two goals in her first collegiate contest for the Seahawks, while another freshman,
Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA / San Ramon Valley) added four assists in her first game for Wagner.
Sophomore
Michelle Greenough (Davis, CA / Davis) scored the first goal of the game for Wagner, then went on to add another in the second half.
Wagner will now take on Claremont Mudd Scripps in an 8:40 contest, before having a 9:00 a.m. game against Colorado State. The Seahawks will have a guaranteed two games tomorrow, as the third-place game of the Brown Invitational will take place at 12:45 p.m., followed by the championship game which will start at 2:00 p.m.
