Queens, NY -
St. John's closed the game with a 13-3 run to hand Wagner a 73-57 setback in non-conference action at Carnesecca Arena. With the win, the Red Storm evens their record at 1-1 while the Seahawks fall to 1-2.

Trailing 58-48 with just over five minutes remaining, junior Jay Harris (Aurora, IL / Valparaiso) canned a pair of three pointers sandwiched between two JaKarr Sampson free throws to trim what was an 18-point deficit to six at 60-54 at the 3:45 mark. On the next possession the Green & White defense forced an errant three pointer, only to see D'Angelo Harrison come up with the offensive carom. Orlando Sanchez took advantage of the extra opportunity and canned a pair at the line while starting a game-clinching 11-0 run that for all intents and purposes put the game out of reach.

Harrison led the way for St. John's with a game-high 25 points, highlighted by a perfect 11-for-11 showing at the line, with five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

In defeat, senior Latif Rivers (Elizabeth, NJ / Avon Old Farms) scored 13 of his team-high 18 points after halftime in pacing Wagner for the second-straight game. Harris added 14 points, fueled by four three pointers, with four rebounds and four assists while senior Kenneth Ortiz (Newark, NJ / Southern Mississippi) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Seahawks with 10 points to go along with a game-high five assists.

The Red Storm opened the game on a 10-3 run, before later using a 12-0 spurt to take a 24-8 lead with 8:47 to play in the first half. St. John's advantage would grow to a game-high 18, before Ortiz scored the final four points of the stanza to make it 36-22 at halftime.

Led by Harrison's 14 first-half points, the Red Storm shot 43.8 percent (14-for-32), compared to just 25.8 percent (8-for-31) for the visitors. St. John's also turned eight Green & White miscues into an 8-0 advantage in points off turnovers in assuming a 14-point lead at intermission.

The Red Storm lead quickly grew to 16 in the beginning of the second half, before Wagner's offense got going. Ortiz converted an old-fashioned three-point play, before freshman Nolan Long (Waterford, CT / South Kent Prep) tipped in a missed jumper. Following a missed shot on the other end, junior Mario Moody (Jersey City, NJ / East Orange Campus) converted an alley-oop dunk on a fast break off a Harris pass to cap a 7-0 run while trimming the deficit to nine at 40-31 with just under 16 minutes to play.

Unfortunately, St. John's would answer after the timeout with a pair from the line as the teams would trade small runs for the next 12-plus minutes, before the Red Storm closed the game out with the aforementioned 13-3 run en route to posting a 73-57 victory.

The Seahawks shot 45.2 percent (14-of-31) from the floor, including 41.7 percent (5-for-12) from deep, while limiting St. John's to just 34.8 percent (8-for-23). The Green & White also held the homestanding Red Storm without a three pointer, but was unable to overcome a 36-9 differential from the free throw line as the hosts took advantage of their opportunities in making good on 80.6 percent (29-for-36).

Moody pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to go along with four blocks and five points while senior Naofall Folahan (Cotonou, Republic of Benin / Wilbraham & Monson Academy (MA)) also had a solid game in the frontcourt, finishing with seven rebounds, two blocks and four points.

Sampson (13 points) and Sir'Dominic Pointer (10 points) joined Harrison in double-figures for St. John's.

Wagner returns to action with a road contest at Coppin State on Monday, November 18 at 7:30 pm.

Notes:
* The Seahawks were outscored in points in the paint (34-26) and from the bench (22-6) for the first time this season.

* Wagner held the opposition without a three pointer for the first time since January 5, 2012, a 88-64 win at Fairleigh Dickinson.

* Rivers notched double-figures for the 64th time in his career while pacing the squad in scoring for the 27th time.

* He now has 1,180 points and moved past Tom Miller (1,174) and Ed Peterson (1,172) into 24th on the all-time Green & White scoring list. Next up is Rivers' former teammate Tyler Murray (1,216).

* Rivers and Harris converted on 7-for-15 from long range while the rest of the team misfired on eight attempts.

* Folahan's two blocks give him 147 for his career, leaving him just 29 off of Frantz Pierre Louis' school-record total of 176.

* Long finished with four points, five rebounds and two blocks in just 11 minutes to lead the second unit.

* There have been no lead changes in Wagner's first three games.

* The Seahawks have lost nine-straight games to St. John's and are now 2-16, all-time, against the Red Storm.

* St. John's posted a 14-2 advantage on fast break points.
