Wagner Topples LIU Brooklyn 1-0

FINAL STATS

Staten Island, NY – Behind a late second half goal from junior Sydney McCarthy, the Wagner women's soccer team defeated LIU Brooklyn 1-0 to improve to 9-4-2 on the season, and 2-2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. The Blackbirds of LIU Brooklyn fall to 3-10-1 on the season, and 1-3-0 in Conference play.

Though the first half remained scoreless, the Seahawks commanded the ball, outshooting LIU Brooklyn 7-1. Junior Alyssa Willard and freshman Maura Peters had Wagner's first two shots on net, though Blackbird goalkeeper Jessica Sexton foiled both opportunities. LIU Brooklyn's only shot of the first half soared high in the 20th minute of play. Neither team would get a shot on goal before time expired.

With both teams hungry for the conference game win, Wagner and LIU Brooklyn came out firing in the second half. Battling back and forth, each squad continued to work hard to create opportunities. The Blackbirds almost converted in the 55th minute, when Jen Spicer connected with a cross in front of the net, though Seahawk goalkeeper Katie Marcy smothered Spicer's shot. Wagner sophomore Siara Kolpon had the next shot on goal, though she was unable to convert, knocking a shot off the low post with less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half.

Wagner was able to put the game to bed in the 84th minute of play, when McCarthy galloped down the field, receiving the ball from Kolpon and controlling it in the face of the defense, before she unleashed a shot that soared into the net from 25 yards out. LIU Brooklyn was unable to answer before the final whistle.

With her tally tonight, McCarthy tied sophomore Samantha Jensen with most points on the season (12). In addition, McCarthy notched her fourth game-winning goal of the season, while also accumulating her fifth goal this year. Kolpon leads the squad in assists with 4.

Overall, Wagner outshot the Blackbirds 10-8 in the second half, and 17-9 in the match. Marcy made two saves, while 18 Seahawks saw action.

The last time Wagner beat LIU was in 2001, with a final score of 1-0. With tonight's win, the Seahawks match their record for most wins in a season. Wagner is now 6-1-1 at home.

The Green & White return to action when they travel to Smithfield, RI, on Friday, October 25th, to face the Bulldogs of Bryant University. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
