Brooklyn, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team fell to defending NEC champion LIU Brooklyn, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn. In the loss, the Seahawks fall to 4-8 overall, and 1-2 in NEC play, while the Blackbirds improve to 3-7-2, and 1-1-2 in conference action.
The Blackbirds scored all three of their goals in the first half of play. Toni Smith started the scoring for LIU in the 10th minute, when she put one home off of a corner kick opportunity. Evelyn Calderon doubled the advantage five minutes later, when she rifled the ball into the top left corner of the net from 20 yards out. The third goal was scored in the 39th minute, when Mariana Ruas poked the ball away and tipped it into the net for the final 3-0 margin.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Maureen Vetter (Brookfield, CT/ Brookfield) played the first half for the Seahawks, making three saves. She was replaced at the half by fellow sophomore
Lisa Capelli (Manalapan, NJ/ Red Bank Catholic), who did not face a shot on goal.
Wagner returns to action on Friday, Oct. 5, when the Seahawks host Quinnipiac for a 3:00 NEC tilt at Hameline Field.
