Solid Play Lifts Wagner To 6-1 Win Over St. Francis (NY)

Wagner won five singles matches and captured the doubles point en route to a dominating 6-1 victory over St. Francis (NY) at the Wagner Tennis Courts. With the win, the Seahawks give head coach Myriam Sopel her first collegiate head coaching victory while improving to 1-1 and 1-0 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) as the Terriers fall in their season opener.

Wagner opened up the match by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to capture the first point of the afternoon. Senior Nikki Arnold (Bethlehem, PA / Liberty) and sophomore Rachel Jurgielewicz (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown East) claimed an 8-2 victory at the top spot, while the freshmen duo of Jenna Harris (Fountain Hills, AZ / Fountain Hills) and Nicole Vukov (Milan, Italy / Boca Prep International (FL)) posted an 8-0 shutout.

In singles play, Jurgielewicz was victorious at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Harris captured her first collegiate win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Lauren Hauer (North Attleboro, MA / North Attleboro) then earned her first victory of the season at No. 4 via a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. In keeping with the shutout theme, Julia Teichman (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Germantown Academy) notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5, improving to 2-0 on the year in the process.

The Green & White also won at No. 6 singles by forfeit, providing the final 6-1 tally.

Wagner returns to action against Rider on Saturday, October 13 at 12:00 pm.
