BOX SCORE
Stockton, CA – The Wagner College water polo team captured its first victory of the 2012 season as the Green & White toppled the Cougars of Azuza Pacific 13-5 at the opening game of the Pacific Invite in Stockton, CA. Six Seahawks scored in the West Coast win as senior co-captains
Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) led the team in goals with four while
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA / Wilson) had a hat-trick and tacked on two assists, leaving her just four shy of breaking the school's all-time assists record.
Starting the match down 1-0 off an early Azuza goal, senior
Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) put the Seahawks on top, hitting back-to-back goals just 34 seconds apart. Following the senior's initiative,
Kaylee Ginnane (Tampa, FL / Coronado, CA ) increased the Wagner lead by two as the sophomore attack sent her first goal of the season into the back of the net with 4:41 to play.
Hollding a 3-1 lead throughout most of the first quarter, the Seahawk defense held Azuza to its lone goal until junior Jennifer Horchler managed to squeeze one by the Wagner defense with 46 seconds left on the clock. Responding quickly, Frenc knocked in her first goal of the season 20 seconds later, ending the period with Wagner on top 4-2.
Out of the huddle, French tacked on a second point 1:15 into second quarter play which was followed by a swift response from Azuza's Megan Minekime, making it a 5-3 game. With 5:15 left, co-captains Beck and French went on a 3-0 run as French knocked in another and Beck added to fashion the score at 8-3. Azuza's Gabrielle Kredel then cut the Wagner lead to four by finding the back of the net with 2:30 minutes to play. Nearing the end of the first half, Beck earned the hat-trick on a last-second shot as she sent a wicked toss into the corner of the cage which put the Seahawks up 9-4 headed into the half.
After the break, the Seahawks went on a 4-0 scoring run as French hit her fourth goal of the game, followed by consecutive goals from sophomore
Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado). Holding the Cougars scoreless throughout the third period, sophomore
Stacy McGregor (Sinking Spring, PA / Wilson) added yet another point, putting the Green & White up 13-4.
The final stanza opened with a Cougar goal from Courtney Folsom which proved to be the final tally of the game as Wagner came away with the 13-5 win.
