Staten Island, NY – Sophomore
Ugo Nwaigwe (Valley Stream, NY/ Valley Stream South) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds, fellow second-year Seahawk
Stephanie Blais (Sherbrooke, Quebec/ Montmorency) posted 19 points and a career-high eight boards, but it was not enough for the Wagner College women's basketball team to get by a hot-shooting Iona team, falling 74-64 at Spiro Sports Center on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-5 on the year, while the Gaels improve to 3-4.
Wagner outrebounded Iona, 45-32, during Saturday's contest, but the Gaels were able to capitalize on 48.1% shooting from the field, along with a 44.4% (8-for-18) mark from outside the arc. The Seahawks shot 36.9% from the floor, including a 41.2% clip in a second half that saw the Green & White score 34 points, tied for the most in a half this season.
Blais' 19 points were one shy of a career-high, and she was bested in the game only by Iona's Joy Adams, who scored 21 points to lead all scorers. Blais led the game with 12 points at the half. Freshman
Jordyn Peck (Shaker Heights, OH/ Shaker Heights) tallied 10 points for the Seahawks, including six in a stretch of 1:08 late in the second half while trying to lead a Wagner comeback attempt.
Nwaigwe scored eight points for the Seahawks, tying a career-best set at Quinnipiac on Jan. 28, 2012. Seniors
Marie-Laurence Archambault (Montreal, Quebec/ Montmorency) and
Chanez Robinson (Newark, NJ/ Shabazz (Northeastern)) also added eight points each. The game was the first for Robinson since opening night against Army on Nov. 9, and she also added six rebounds. The senior tri-captain had missed the past four games for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks have a quick turnaround, returning to action on Tuesday when the Green & White take on the Orange of Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. The game tips at 7:00 pm.
