Seahawks Defeated By Monmouth, 3-2

The Wagner College women's soccer team fell to Monmouth, 3-2, in NEC action at Hameline Field on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 4-11 on the season, and 1-5 in NEC play, while the Hawks improve to 9-5-2, and 6-1-1 in conference games.

Wagner struck first in the contest, as freshman Johanna Konrad (Volkach, Germany/ LSH) scored her first collegiate goal in the 7th minute. Konrad headed a corner kick from sophomore Alissa Bianculli (Islip, NY/ Saint Anthony's) into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Monmouth evened the score in the 39th minute as Monique Goncalves took the deflection of her initial shot and sent it home to tie the game at one.

The score would remain even until the 74th minute, when the Hawks jumped ahead for good. Monmouth capitalized on a corner kick, as Dana Costello's kick into the box was headed in by Alexa Freguletti for a 2-1 lead.

The two teams would trade tallies in the final minute of play, as Goncalves recorded her second goal of the game, as the Hawks took advantage of a turnover in front of the net. Wagner answered back with 13 seconds to play, as senior Alyssa Grecco (Staten Island, NY/ Notre Dame Academy) fired a shot from the left side of the net to pull the Seahawks to the final 3-2 margin.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lisa Capelli (Manalapan, NJ/ Red Bank Catholic) made five saves for Wagner in the defeat. Jocelyn McCoy stopped six shots for Monmouth.

The Seahawks return to action on Friday, Oct. 19, when the Green & White host Central Connecticut at 3:00 PM.
