ChampionsGate, FL – The Wagner College men's golf team concluded its 2011 campaign with a ninth place finish at the Northeast Conference Championship this weekend contested at the ChampionsGate Golf Club in Florida.
The Seahawks were once again led by junior Steve Nakajima (Delta British Columbia, Canada / Delta Secondary School) who fired an opening round 75, before carding an 81 in round two and a 79 in the third and final round, to finish tied for 29th at plus 19.
Nine strokes back from his teammate, freshman Tommy Arison (Fairlawn, OH / Archbishop Hogan High) posted two rounds of 80 and an 84 to complete his first conference championship at plus 28 and tied for 43rd place.
Stacked side-by-side on the final leader board were fellow first-year teammates Jan Saroch (Prague, Czech Republic / Gymnazium Jiriho Gutha-Jarkovskeho) and Jason Hopkins (Menifee, CA / Paloma Valley) who finished plus 31 and plus 33, respectively. Saroch went 82-85-80 for his 46th place finish, while Hopkins shot rounds of 77-85-87 for his 47th place.
Freshman Eric Mathias (Martinsburg, WV / Martinsburg) rounded out the five-man squad for the Seahawks, shooting an opening round 87 before firing the team's lowest score of the event, a 73 on day two. Mathias slipped back down the leader board in the final 18, posting a 94 to finish at plus 38 and in 51st place.
Wagner's team score of 963 placed them in ninth at the end of the 54-hole event. The Pioneers of Sacred Heart, who led all three rounds of the tournament, stayed on top to claim their fourth NEC championship title in the last four years. The individual champion, C.G. Mercatoris, from Robert Morris finished the event minus-one.
