Wagner Improves To 6-1 After Wins Over Maryland and George Washington

Senior Co-Captain Laura Vanderbent Scored The Game Winning Goal Against Maryland
College Park, MD – The Wagner water polo team improved to 6-1 after posting a 3-0 record with wins over Bucknell, Maryland and George Washington at this weekend's Maryland Invitational. In the final game of Saturday's session, the Seahawks put forth another impressive performance against the homestanding Terps, winning 9-8 in overtime before wrapping up play this morning with with their third one-goal victory of the weekend, an 8-7 win opposite George Washington.

GAME ONE: Wagner vs. Maryland

With adrenaline pumping after the exciting win over Bucknell earlier in the day, the Seahawks went into the game against Maryland with the fervor and tenacity to knock off the host team. After leading the Terps until the final 33 seconds in regulation, Maryland's Katie Ermakova found the net to tie the game at 7-all and send it into overtime. In the second overtime period, senior co-captain Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA / Governor Mifflin) scored the game winning goal with three seconds remaining to give Wagner the 9-8 victory.

Wagner had seven Seahawks record goals during the game with Vanderbent and Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) leading the scoring with two goals each. Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA /Wilson), Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn), Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA / Souderton Area), Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) and rookie Kaylee Ginnane (Tampa, FL / Coronado, CA) each added one goal in the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) had a strong game in net with 15 saves and 8 goals allowed.

This win marks only the second time Wagner has beaten Maryland in eight tries.

GAME TWO: Wagner vs. George Washington

Wagner opened the second day of the Maryland Invite with an 8-7 win over George Washington. Leading the Colonials throughout the entire game, Wagner's win put them at a perfect 3-0 on the weekend.

Leading the scoring for the Green and White was freshman Sidney Hoshko (Coronado, CA / Coronado). Hoshko knocked in three goals and had one steal against the Colonials. Following the rookie were Lauren French (Colmar, PA / North Penn) and Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA /Wilson). French accumulated two goals, one steal and drew seven exclusions as Beck also found the back of the net twice, had one assist and two steals.

Junior Becca Hannings (Lansdale, PA / North Penn) led Wagner in assists with three while also scoring one goal. Goalkeeper Laura Karbach (Abington, PA / Germantown Academy) had seven saves.

The Seahawk's five game winning streak marks the best season start in program history. Wagner returns to action Saturday, February 26 at the ECAC tournament.
