Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team dropped its third Northeast Conference (NEC) game of the year today, falling to the Blackbirds of Long Island, 2-1, at Wagner College Stadium. The loss moves the Seahawks to 8-4-2 overall, with a 2-3-0 mark in the league, while LIU improves to 6-7-0 and 3-2 in the NEC.
Wagner's cross-bridge rival came out blazing in the first half, pressuring the Seahawks' defense from the opening kick. The Blackbirds' relentless attack paid off in the 21
st minute when Jen Spicer played a low-lining cross into the box where fellow forward Ariana Calderon was waiting. The senior took just one settling touch before blasting a shot on goal, which went off a diving
Katie Marcy's (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) hands and into the net.
The Blackbirds had outshot Wagner 12-0 midway through the first half before forward
Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) evened the game. After a hard LIU foul, senior
Terryn Marette (Chevy Chase, MD / Chevy Chase) played an arching free kick into the box where Vigliotti went up and headed her shot past keeper Jessica Sexton for her fifth goal of the season.
The speedy junior would record Wagner's only other shot of the half as the buzzer sounded, rifling a shot up over the cage, as LIU went into the halftime break with a 15-2 shot advantage.
Long Island's offensive leader broke the 1-1 tie in the 70
th minute when Calderon cut around a Wagner defender and blasted a shot past Marcy and into the side netting, giving the Blackbirds the 2-1 advantage. Calderon ended the contest with a game-high nine shots, putting six of them on frame.
Wagner defender
Katie Keown (Morris Plains, NJ / Morristown) was the only other Seahawk player besides Vigliotti to get a shot on goal, as Sexton made just one save in the 2-1 Blackbirds' win. Marcy finished the game with eight saves for the Green & White.
The Seahawks will take to the road for their next two contests, traveling to Central Connecticut State on Friday, October 14, before taking on Quinnipiac on Sunday, October 16.
