Staten Island, NY - Robert Morris scored 30 unanswered points after halftime en route to a 30-9 victory over Wagner in front of 2410 fans in today's Northeast Conference (NEC) Game of the Week televised by MSG at Wagner Stadium. Senior co-captain
Keith Davis (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt) had a monster game, recording a game-high and career-best 14 tackles, including three stops for loss.
In defeat, the Seahawks fall to 1-2 and 0-1 in the NEC while the Colonials improve to 3-1 and 2-0 in the NEC.
Wagner controlled the tempo in the first half driving into the Robert Morris red zone on the opening possession only to come up short. Following a Colonial three-and-out, sophomore quarterback
Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY / Moore Catholic) led the Seahawks on a five play, 22-yard scoring drive that took 2:13 off the clock. Sophomore
David Lopez (Plantation, FL / American Heritage) capped the drive with 41-yard field goal that opened the scoring with 6:53 to go in the first quarter.
The Colonials then mounted its best drive of the first half, going 64 yards while taking 6:15 off the clock before Garrett Clawson missed a 33-yard field goal, giving the ball back to the Green & White.
Wagner appeared poised to add to the lead when Doscher quickly got the Green & White into Robert Morris territory on a pair of carries for 21 yards. However the Colonial defense collected the first of four interceptions on the day, quelling the threat.
After a Robert Morris punt, Doscher led Wagner into Colonial territory before having the drive stall at the visitor's 33-yard line. Facing fourth and six, head coach
Walt Hameline elected to go for it and Doscher found senior
Justin Matthews' (Hillside, NJ / Hillside) for a 33-yard touchdown down the middle of the field, putting the Green & White up 9-0 following a missed extra point with 1:46 remaining before halftime. All told the Seahawks went 93 yards on 13 plays while taking 6:54 off the clock.
Doscher was 7-for-11 for 91 yards and a score in the opening half as Wagner outgained Robert Morris 167-111 while converting 3-of-7 on third down while not having to punt. The Seahawks also controlled the clock by a margin of 17:42-12:18. Davis led an outstanding defensive effort with eight tackles while helping hold reigning FCS National Player of the Week Myles Russ to just 36 yards on 11 carries (3.3 ypc).
From that point on it would be all Robert Morris as the Colonials outscored Wagner 30-0 after halftime, while outgaining the Green & White by a 279-51 margin as the visitors averaged 7.5 yards per play, compared to 2.0 for the Seahawks.
After going just 4-for-13 for 44 yards in the first half, Robert Morris quarterback Jeff Sinclair was 11-for-14 for 197 yards and four touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Wagner passing game was just 2-of-12 for 30 yards and three interceptions.
The Colonials got on the board in the third quarter with a 31 yard Clawson field goal at the 5:32 mark.
On the ensuing drive, Wagner drove into Robert Morris territory before being stopped at the Colonial 47-yard line. Then on fourth and five, senior punter
Kyle Muir (Spencerport, NY / Spencerport) rushed for 14 yards on a perfectly executed fake punt that was nullified by a holding call.
Robert Morris took advantage of the miscue as Sinclair hooked up with T.J. Green on a 65-yard touchdown pass that made it 10-9 following the extra point with 25 seconds to go in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Colonials knocked Doscher for a series before forcing a fumble that was recovered at the Wagner 23 yard line. After juniors
Dom Gaston (Phillipsburg, NJ / Bergen Catholic) and
Julian Stanford (Bloomfield, CT / Bloomfield) combined for an eight-yard sack, Sinclair hooked up with Jamie Cobb for a 31-yard touchdown with 12:23 to play, making it 17-9.
Robert Morris tacked on 13-more points off turnovers for the 30-9 victory.
Doscher finished just 9-for-21 for 121 yards with one touchdown while picking up 37 yards on 13 carries. Matthews had a team-best three catches for 52 yards, highlighted by a 33-yard touchdown reception. Senior
Jeremy Martinez (Brookhaven, NY / Bellport) matched the sophomore signal caller with 37 yards on 13 carries.
Davis stood out for the defense with his 14 tackles while senior defensive backs #T.J. Czeski# (Amsterdam, NY / Amsterdam) (8 tackles),
Chaz Legette (Syracuse, NY / Nottingham) (7 tackles) and
Frantz Placide (Miami, FL / Archbishop Curley Notre Dame) (5 tackles, 3 pass break-ups, 1 forced fumble) all had strong games.
For Robert Morris, Sinclair finished up 15-of-27 for 241 yards and four touchdowns while Cobb hauled in six passes for 76 yards and two scores. Green also had catches of 65 and 47 yards, totaling 112 with a touchdown. Russ had 95 yards on 19 carries, leading all rushers.
