Newark, NJ - A
breakaway goal in the 82nd minute by Wagner's sophomore star Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY) sent the visiting Seahawks past NJIT, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer Friday night on Lubetkin Field at J. Malcolm Simon Stadium.
Wagner is 4-2 on the season, while NJIT falls to 1-4.
The diminutive Vigliotti gave the NJIT defense fits all night with her speed and quickness on the ball and she put the speed on display to break the scoreless tie with less than nine minutes remaining in the second half.
Wagner junior Kaitlyn Llewellyn (Island Lake, IL) sent a pass out of the defensive half and Vigliotti, stopped in order to remain onside a couple of yards beyond the center stripe.
The sophomore then played the ball quickly and burst into full sprint, past the defense, and carried alone for 50 yards, before tucking the ball inside the right post beyond the reach of NJIT's sprawling goalkeeper, Sadie Mele.
With the Highlanders enjoying a 14-8 advantage in overall shots, Wagner goalkeeper Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY) made seven saves in picking up her second shutout of the season. NJIT's Mele made three saves, two of which denied what appeared to be sure goals.
The Seahawks return to action on Sunday, September 12, as they travel down to Philadelphia, PA, to take on Drexel. Kickoff for that contest is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
