Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's tennis team collected its first victory of the year with a narrow 4-3 win over St. Francis (NY) in Northeast Conference (NEC) action at the Wagner Tennis Courts. With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 1-5 and 1-1 in the NEC while the Terriers fall to 0-7 and 0-2 in league play.
The Green & White captured the all important doubles' point by taking two of the three matches. Freshmen
Nikki Arnold (Bethlehem, PA / Liberty) and Aurora Brennen (Yaphank, NY / Longwood) won at No. 1 doubles by an 8-3 count over Arianna Van Sluytman and Renee Warner. The Terriers were victorious at No. 2 doubles before the freshmen tandem of
Kaeli Havunen and
Catharine Scavelli (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph Hill) defeated Ashley Del Orbe and Angel Lawrence 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
The doubles point was the difference as the teams split the six singles' matches. Junior
Joanna Ciavarella (Brooklyn, NY / Fontbone Academy) dominated Shakaya Slay 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore
Sabrina DiLeo (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) followed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Renee Warner at No. 4 singles. Havunen capped the winners for the Seahawks with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win over Lawrence at No. 5 singles.
Wagner heads to Hartford today for a 4:00 pm match.
