Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College softball team split a pair of games this afternoon with the Temple University Owls at Wagner's Lower Athletics Field. After falling in the opener, 6-3, the Seahawks secured a seventh inning come-back victory in the night cap, 4-3.
After trailing Temple in the top of the seventh inning of the second game, the Seahawks rallied back by scoring three runs on three hits and an error to take the win 4-3.
Temple went out to an early lead in the top of the third, scoring off a Wagner miscue. The Owls extended the lead in the sixth to 3-0 on a two-run home run to right field by Kayla Cook.
Wagner responded in the bottom of the frame, plating freshman
Krysta Fauria (Yorba Linda, CA / Valencia), who was hit by a pitch, on sophomore
Amanda Garcia's (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) sacrifice fly to left field.
In the bottom of the seventh the Green & White finished the comeback, scoring three runs on two doubles and a fielding error by Temple's second baseman. Sophomore
Vanessa Lenart's (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS) double to center field drove in senior
Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley), who pinch ran for junior Christian Pinkus (reached on a single up the middle), cutting Temple's lead to 3-2. Junior
Hailey Corthell (Reno, NV / Reno) followed with a double to right field, plating Lenart for the tying run. Corthell scored the walk-off run on Temple's fielding error, giving Wagner the 4-3 victory.
At the plate, Lenart paced the team going 3-3 with one run scored and a RBI, while Corthell went 2-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
In the circle, freshman
Terah DeBinder (Cypress, CA / Cypress) took her fifth win of the season, pitching a complete game while fanning seven.
In game one, the Seahawks took a two-run lead in the first couldn't hold back the Owls as they scattered six runs across the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings.
In the top of the first, Fauria reached on a walk and scored the Green & White's first run of the game on an error by Temple's second baseman. Freshman
Brittany Huss (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) extended Wagner's lead to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly to right field, plating junior
Emily Pierce.
Temple cut the Seahawks' lead in half in the fourth on a single to center field. The Owls scored three more runs in the fifth on two singles and a Wagner miscue. In the top of the seventh, Temple added their last two runs off a two-run home run by Danielle Fagan, bringing the score to 6-2.
The Seahawks managed to plate one more run in the bottom of the seventh on an error by Temple's pitcher but were unable to recover from the deficit.
Freshman
Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) (5-9) took the loss, pitching a complete game. Betz only allowed one earned run and fanned four batters.
Wagner (11-24, 5-5 NEC) returns to action on Sunday, April 18th when the Seahawks travel to Hackensack, NJ to face Fairleigh Dickinson University in a Northeast Conference doubleheader at 12:00PM.
