Loudonville, NY – The Wagner Water Polo team (12-17, 2-2 MAAC) suffered their second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) loss on Saturday, 11-5, to the Iona College Gaels. The Seahawks finished their first doubleheader of the weekend 1-1 with a win earlier today over Villanova.
A five-goal second period opened up the flood gates for the Gaels, who took a 5-2 lead at halftime. Iona scored three goals in each remaining period as the Seahawks were only able to score once in the third period and twice in the final period for the 11-5 final.
Five different Seahawks accounted for goals. Juniors
Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) and
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) scored in the second period to put Seahawks back within three goals at halftime. Junior
Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Governor Mifflin) accounted for Wagner's only goal in the third period, while sophomores
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson) and
Lauren French (Shillington, PA/North Penn) each tacked on a goal in the fourth quarter.
Beck, French, Pyrz, and Vanderbent had a goal in both games of Saturday's doubleheader. Beck currently has the longest active scoring streak of the season – finding the back of the net in each of the last ten games. Vanderbent had the previous season-long scoring streak after tallying a goal in nine consecutive games earlier this season.
Senior goalie
Kelsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon/Fullerton JC) had nine saves in defeat. It is her first game with single-digit saves since Wagner's 10-4 loss to San Diego State University on March 13th.
The Seahawks return to action tomorrow when they travel to Marist College to take on Siena and St. Francis (NY). Their first game against Siena is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
