Water Polo Drops Two in ECAC’s Opening Day

Sophomore Chelsea Beck
Princeton, NJ – The Wagner College Water Polo team (3-7, 0-0 MAAC) lost two games to No. 20 Brown University, 6-2, and to Harvard University, 14-9, at the ECAC Women's Water Polo Championships in Princeton, NJ. The Seahawks, who entered the weekend as the sixth seed in the tournament, will compete against fifth seeded Iona College tomorrow morning.

In their first game the Seahawks took an early 2-0 lead against Brown. However it was all Brown University from there, as the Bear tallied six unanswered goals in a 6-2 win. In Wagner's second contest against Harvard, the Seahawks once again found themselves on top after one quarter, 3-2. A 3-1 run in the second period made the score 6-3 in Wagner's favor at halftime. But the Seahawks stumbled from there – being outscored 11-3 in the second half as Harvard came from behind to win 14-9.

Wagner's leading goal scorer, sophomore Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson), led the Seahawks' offense with a goal against Brown and two scores against Harvard. Headed into Sunday's action, Beck currently leads the team with 13 goals.

Two Seahawks totaled two goals on the day, including junior Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) who passed her 2009 total with a goal in each game, and freshman Monique Martinet (Mission Viejo, CA/Mission Viejo), who had her first multi-goal game of her career against Harvard. Juniors Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Governor Mifflin) and Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) each added a goal against Harvard. Giles has scored in eight of last nine games, while Pyrz has found the back of the net in five of the last six games.

Action beings at 10:00 AM when Wagner takes on Iona College in a non-Conference match up. Iona, a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent, shared the MAAC Regular Season Championship with the Seahawks last season.
