Lewisburg, PA – Early reports from the first day of the Bucknell Invitational show that the Wagner College Seahawks (1-1, 0-0 MAAC) earned their first victory of the season, 7-3, over the George Washington University Colonials. The win holds a special significance for Head Coach Pat Beemer, who became the first 100-game winner in Wagner College history.
The Seahawks came out on fire in the opening quarter – tallying three goals while holding the Colonials scoreless. The teams matched goals in the second and third periods to put the Seahawks on top, 5-2, headed into the fourth quarter. In the last period, Wagner tacked on two more scores while the Colonials only found the back of the net once for a final score of 7-3.
Sophomore
Chelsea Beck (Reading, PA/Wilson) and junior
Laura Vanderbent (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) totaled two goals apiece in the victory. For Beck, today marked the second time in as many years that the sophomore stand-out scored twice in a win against the Colonials. Beck finished her rookie campaign with 5 multi-goal games.
Vanderbent's production is also a good sign for the Seahawks. She totaled only nine goals during an injury-prone 2009 campaign. It is her first multi-goal game since Wagner's 13-9 win over Iona College on February 28th, 2009.
Adding to the Seahawks scoring spree were freshmen
Katie Jordan (Westlake Village, CA/Agoura) and
Leslie Poole (Downey, CA/Warren). Both claimed their first collegiate score in the win.
The Seahawks did not fare as well in the second game, losing 8-7 to the Bucknell University Bison. Wagner fell behind early, 6-3, but rallied in the third period to even the score at 6-6. A late fourth quarter goal by the Seahawks was not enough as the Bison struck twice in the final period to make the final score, 8-7.
For the Seahawks, junior
Natalie Pyrz (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) led the way with three goals. It was the fourth time in the last two seasons that Pyrz scored three or more goals in a game. The last time she scored over three goals in a single game was April 18th, 2009 in a 7-5 Conference win over Iona College. Pyrz leads all active players with 40 career scores.
Junior
Carina Giles (Mohton, PA/Governor Mifflin), sophomore
Molly Robinson (Lansdale, PA/Pennridge), sophomore
Lauren French (Shillington, PA/North Penn), and Beck each tallied a goal apiece in defeat. The score was Beck's third goal of the day.
The Seahawks return to action tomorrow against Mercyhurst College at 9:45 AM.
