Seahawks Blank Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-0

Box Score

Teaneck, NJ –
Scoring her sixth goal of the season, sophomore Julie Vigliotti (Staten Island, NY) led the Wagner College soccer team to its fifth victory of the season, as the Green and White knocked off Northeast Conference opponent, Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-0, in Teaneck, New Jersey.

The Seahawks, who were outshot 8-5 in the first half, capitalized on their early opportunity, after freshman Jackie Nicholas (Rockville, Center, NY) sprung Vigliotti with a breakaway pass in the 34th minute of the game. The striker took care of the rest placing her shot into the back of the net past Stephanie Tanzi to give Wagner the 1-0 lead. The goal marked Vigliotti's team-high sixth mark of the year, while Nicholas earned her first assist of the season.

The Knights had their chances in the opening period, earning three corner kick chances, but the Seahawk backline, anchored by freshman Katie Marcy (Bellmore, NY), answered each attempt.

Wagner continued its pressure in the second half, jumping on the Knights defense and attempting fours shots, and allowing only three. The Seahawks also made up for having no corner kick opportunities in the first half, by earning four in the second frame.

Senior Catherine Del Medico (Park Ridge, IL), a mainstay in the Seahawks midfield, netted her first goal of the season in the 81st minute to insure the Green and White victory. Del Medico got a foot on a loose ball in the Knights penalty area and finished her shot to cap off the 2-0 Wagner win.

Marcy, last weeks NEC Rookie of the Week, recorded her fourth shutout of the season, ending the match with three saves, while Tanzi stopped four Seahawk shots in the loss.

With the win, Wagner improves to 5-7-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the conference, while Fairleigh Dickinson remains winless on the year, falling to 0-11-0 and 0-3 in NEC play.

Wagner concludes their NEC weekend road trip on Sunday, October 10, when the team travels to Fairfield, CT, to take on Sacred Heart at 3:00 pm.
