BOX SCORE
Providence, RI – In a game that featured 14 ties and 16 lead changes, the Wagner College men's basketball team suffered an excruciating 72-71 overtime loss at Brown.
In dropping their fourth straight game, the Seahawks fall to 2-13 on the season while the Bears improve to 6-9.
Wagner, which led 35-33 at halftime, tied the score at 60-60 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Tyler Murray (Toronto, CA/Eastern Commerce) with 1:35 left in regulation. The Seahawks then forced overtime on a dunk by senior center
Michael Orock (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) with 19 seconds left to play in regulation. Brown had a chance to win it in regulation but Adrian Williams' three-point try with three seconds left to play bounded off the rim.
The Seahawks took a quick 65-62 lead in overtime when junior center Clifton Spiller (Pleasantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) made an old-fashioned three-point play, sinking a layup followed by a free throw 31 seconds into OT. Two free throws by Matt Mullery drew Brown to within 65-64 with 3:23 left.
A pair of free throws by Orock followed by a jumper by Brown's Tucker Halpern made it a 67-66 game with 2:31 left. A layup by Orock was answered by a Mullery layup with 1:01 to go which made it 69-68 Wagner. A foul line jumper by Murray with 32 seconds left was followed by a Halpern layup with 20 seconds to go, making the score 71-70 Wagner.
Brown then called time out to set up a full court press, which forced a Wagner turnover with 11 seconds left. Following another Brown timeout, Mullery hit a driving layup with five seconds to go to give the Bears their first lead of overtime. Wagner then pushed the ball upcourt but a hurried, long three-point attempt by sophomore guard
Chris Martin (Sicklerville, NJ/Apex Academies) was off the mark as Brown held on for the win.
Orock paced Wagner with 19 points and eight rebounds while Murray and Martin added 15 and 10 points, respectively. Halpern led all scorers with 22 points while Andrew McCarthy and Mullery added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
The Seahawks, who have now completed the non-conference portion of their schedule, return to Northeast Conference play by traveling to Sacred Heart on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7:45 pm.
